Hi, I’m Lygia and I am a delightful, sweet pup!

History

I lived with my first set of humans for the first 6 years of my life. I love my first family as we went on many walks and played in the gorges in Ithaca.  My family needed to move into an apartment, and they had two babies! It became a little tight for all of us and the human babies didn’t understand how to play with me in a safe way.  I had a wonderful and happy life with my humans and now I am looking for my new forever home.

Personality

I love my humans and I really enjoy going for walks with them.  If we go for a car ride, I love to look out the window and I behave well in the car.  If you take me anywhere near water, I will love you “furever!”  I love to swim and play and bark in the water!! While on a leashed walk, I can get a little excited so my humans need to remind me to not pull. I can get spooked by bicycles!  My humans make sure to not let me off my leash because I don’t learn/know/follow commands much, as is the case with most Dachshunds!  Who needs to learn words like sit, stay, or lay down?  I do those things when I want because I am a good girl. If you take me to a dog park that has a small dog area, I do a good job–I like to wander around but am a little shy with other dogs and tend to play by myself.  When we get home, I love when my humans water the flowers!!  They spray the hose and I will play chase and bark with the water for hours!  I also like to hunt for squirrels and chipmunks in my fenced in yard.

Otherwise, I am really quite chill.  I love taking naps whenever I can and when I sleep…I sleep hard.  My foster humans have to give me a gentle little shake to wake me up and get me moving or to remind me that it’s been a while and it’s time to go potty.  I do love to take naps and am happiest when I am touching my human nearby.

At night time, I am okay to be in my own bed on the floor next to my humans, but may ask to get in bed with any human that lets me! I prefer that!  I do get a little nervous when my humans are not in sight.  I am learning how to be patient for them to come home.

I learned to use a doggy door and I love going into the fenced yard and then coming back in as I like! I enjoy playing with toys by myself and like the squeaky ones best.  I am very well housetrained, I have never had an accident in my foster home!

I get along with other dogs as long as they are nice to me.   I currently have two foster Dachshund sisters and we do well together, as they are nice.  I had to learn how to share the human attention, as I really wanted it all for myself, but with their gentle guidance, I can now share their attention (though I like to get the most!).

Did I mention that I like to eat?  I will eat whatever you give me! Even if it makes me gain weight!  So my humans make sure I don’t get table treats or snacks and get a measured amount for my meals. Dachshunds need to be careful to keep a healthy body weight because as a breed, they are at risk for spine issues/back issues and a healthy weight helps!

Cohabitation

I love any and all people I interact with. I love giving kisses and being friendly.
My first family had little humans that had a hard time playing with me gently, quietly, and safely, and that did bother me.  I never hurt them, but I barked at them to stop, and was clearly unhappy.

I like other dogs as long as they are nice to me.  I don’t play a lot of games with other dogs though, I like to do my own thing.  I do like attention so I will definitely try to be closer to my humans than the other animals in the house, so the other dogs have to be easygoing about that sort of thing.

We don’t know how I am with cats!

Favorite Activities

  • Playing in the water! I have my own life vest!
  • Going for walks with you!
  • Going for car rides! I love looking out the window!
  • Cuddling with my humans!
  • Looking for chipmunks and squirrels in a fenced yard!

Medical

Overall, I am very healthy.  I need to eat a special food because my skin can be sensitive/allergic to certain foods. I have a few allergies that are typical to dachshunds.  I have gotten infected teeth from time to time, so you need to keep an eye on dental care for me please!

Summary

Lygia is an absolutely great dog and we love being her foster parents.  If we didn’t have two dogs already, we would have considered keeping her because she is so GREAT!  Lygia would do best with a family that is home a lot and takes the time to help her work on command words.  She loves to swim, go for walks and stay active.  She will need this to help her maintain a healthy weight because she can just as easily be lazy in the house and sleep.  You will absolutely fall in love with Lygia in a heartbeat!

If you are interested in adopting me, please fill out an online adoption application and live close to Ithaca, Syracuse, Binghamton, Rochester, or Elmira. We do home visits on every applicant, and can’t do home visits where we don’t have local volunteers.
