Hello! My name is Emmy and outdoor adventures are my favorite!!
History/ Why I am looking for a new home
Since puppyhood, Emmy and her owner have shared long daily walks and adventures together, but an unexpected health condition for her owner makes it impossible for her to continue providing care for Emmy. Friends of the owner, we have taken Emmy into our home with our 2 dogs and cats and 2 kids, until a new wonderful well-matched person or family can be found to provide Emmy with the deep level of love, devotion and care that she deserves!
Personality
I’m a very, very sweet girl! I love people and love exploring the world with my people! As is a husky trait, I become bonded most deeply to one person in a household, but have plenty of love to share with everyone else. If you want to give me belly rubs…I will show how overjoyed I am by making big goofy smiles and rolling around on my back in utter pleasure! A sight to behold, I am told. Until I get to know you and feel really comfortable and relaxed with you, you might find me a bit proper or a bit reserved, but once we are friends, you will see my goofy/silly side! Haha, my foster mom says her favorite goofy thing I do is what she calls “The Slide.” I lay on my back on the grass and use my back feet to slide down the hill kind of like an upside-down penguin! It cracks her up every single time!!
I am a very smart girl, and am treat-motivated. I’m crate/housed trained, and I know all of the basic commands, like “sit” “down” “drop-it/leave it”. I pick up on what you are asking very quickly, however, I can have my own opinions sometimes about whether I feel like doing what you are asking (though having treats definitely helps with this)! I like to be in accord with you, but appreciate if you understand that we smart breeds do like to think for ourselves sometimes. I’m currently working on not pulling on leashed walks, and on not rushing the door (it’s hard…I am very excited and enthusiastic about going outside!). I’m doing well with these, I just need some patience and consistency in training guidance.
Don’t let my age fool you– I still have a lot of energy, and I thrive when I can get some of that energy out. As you can see through the smile on my face in my photos, I am happiest when I am out exploring in nature. I like to take in all the smells and sometimes pause to investigate things further with my nose or mouth, but I can “drop it/leave it” if I find something that you prefer I not explore! I also thoroughly enjoy zooming around off-leash, so if you have a fenced yard or if there is a safe dog park nearby, I would love to show you my speed!
We huskies can sometimes be vocal, which for the right adopter, is the coolest thing ever. I will likely vocalize to announce that someone has just come home, if I know that you are awake but you haven’t yet said hi to me, if I need you to let me out so I can go pee, and if I think you need a reminder that “I’m here…Don’t forget about me!” The other dogs in my foster home don’t get my language, sometimes I wonder if they are dogs at all, as they hardly make a noise!
Cohabitation
With people: I can take some time to get affectionate with new people, I need to know you are my friend and that you are kind and loving and then I feel safe to be affectionate and silly. It took a couple of months before I settled into my foster house and started asking my foster mom for love, and she says it was so worth the wait. Now I lean into her and give her my doggy hugs when she pets me!
Sometimes I get so happy/excited and can jump up on you to share the enthusiasm! For this reason, I should not live with elderly, fragile, or mobility-challenged folks, or with small kids who might dislike my occasional happy-jumping. There is a 6 and 9 year old in my foster home and we all love each other, even though they don’t love my happy-jumping.
With dogs: I have done well with dogs in lots of social situations. I’ve been boarded and did well with dogs there, I have gone to doggy daycare and have done well there, and have participated well in doggy play groups. I’m currently sharing my foster home with two other dogs and while it’s been totally great with 1 of them, there was 1 glitchy moment between me and the other one in the early days after I arrived. It involved us both finding a snakeskin outside, and it seemed like I got mad when that dog tried to sniff the snakeskin when I was sniffing it. I nipped/bit her, my foster mom kept us separate for a month, but we have now been reintroduced and haven’t had further issues.
With cats: Sorry, not a good mix. They trigger my prey drive; I see cats the same as squirrels and that’s not good or safe for the cats!
Favorite Activities
- Long leashed walks in the woods!
- Getting my zoomies out in a fenced yard or a dog park…let me show you my speed!!!
- I don’t love to swim, but I do love to wade in shallow waters!
- Belly Rubs! More please!
- Butt/Back Scratches! You know that spot on my back right near my tail…that’s perfect 😊
- A Kong when it is filled with lots of good treats!
Medical
Up to date on all vaccines no medical issues to date, current on flea/tick and heartworm preventive medications.
Summary
Overall, Emmy is a super sweet, intelligent, athletic, dog who is looking for someone to share the rest of her years with. She thrives on knowing there is someone special dedicated to her, she loves getting to go for leashed outdoor adventures with you!
