Hello! My name is Mina, I am from St Croix, and I love affection, playing with other dogs, snuggling, swimming and fun.

History

Mina was living under a vacant house in St. Croix, tending to her litter of pups as best she could. She was discovered when a painter heard the puppies crying and called rescuers with Cruzan Satos Rescue. They coaxed her out by gathering up the puppies and waiting for them to cry for her. They did cry, and Mina came out. She was shy and scared, but incredibly sweet. Even from under that house, she was eating from human hands. After making sure that the whole dog family was safely out from under the house, the puppies were adopted and Mina was eventually relocated to a fabulous foster home in Ithaca N.Y. where she happily awaits her forever home!

Personality

This is a doggie that is full of love! She loves her foster mom and dad and is always so happy to meet other nice humans. She has tons of love to give- her entire body wags and she is always eager to give lots of kisses. Mina is always grateful for your attention, care, and especially your love. She loves it when you want to hang out with her, take her for walks, give her belly rubs, and sit next to her on the couch. Mina loves snuggling with humans and has taken a liking to sleep in a big comfy human bed!!

Mina LOVES her foster siblings. All she has to do is look at them, and she starts wagging her tail happily. Mina plays, and plays and plays brother and sister- she has brought much joy to her foster home. When her foster siblings don’t want to play, she finds something else to do. Mina does play roughly, so she will need a proper introduction to other doggies. She is very respectful around dogs while eating and has no problems eating in the same room as other doggies. She is food motivated, but not food-obsessed. Because she is so happy with her foster sister and brother now, SHE WOULD REALLY THRIVE WITH ANOTHER DOGGIE OR TWO IN HER FOREVER HOME, we REALLY hope to find that for her.

Mina goes on daily walks but can tug while on a leash when she is excited- she redirects easily though. Her tail wags like crazy, and she jumps around and smiles when she’s on her walks. She is so joyful, it is gorgeous to be around! She doesn’t need a ton of exercise, however, and in general, is pretty chill. She is happy to be with you and be a valued member of your family.

Mina is not a huge fan of the cold, but who can blame her… she is from the Caribbean! She would appreciate a nice warm coat for winter walks and a nice warm place to cozy up in your home. Mina would love a fenced-in yard!

Cohabitation

Mina is awesome with people! Since she has not been around kids, we can’t say if she is gentle or excitable, calm or nervous with them. For that reason, we’re thinking that kids 10+ might be the safest bet, but if you have gentle, dog-experienced kids younger, we could check it out.

Mina needs proper introductions to new dogs, but we think would be very happy in a home with another dog or two!

Mina seems too excited about the outdoor cats she sees–and we worry that her excitement is not in a “hey, I want to be your friend” sort of way. She should not be in a home with cats, sorry.

Favorite Activities

    • Mena loves to play with her foster brother and sister doggies!
    • Mina absolutely loves the water, she will swim all day if you let her.
    • Mena loves to snuggle with her foster mom!
    • Mena loves a good leashed walk in town or hiking in the woods!
    • Mena likes to sit in the sun and relax- she is an Island doggie after all!
    • Mena likes to go on car rides!
    • Mena loves meeting all of her mom’s new friends, and even new people on the street!

Medical

Mina never complains about a thing but she has 2 medical issues:
1) She tested “light heartworm positive” and is on monthly heartworm prevention to treat that. They think that is the extent of the treatment that she will need. It is one pill each month- so not a huge commitment.
2) Mina has hip dysplasia and patella luxation in her two back legs.
She has had thorough exams by Cornerstone Veterinarians and Cornell Vet School- Sports Medicine Clinic- we have a significant amount of information on her because of these exams. She takes supplements for pain and goes for stair/hill walking to help develop her muscles.

Summary

After delivering and rearing 2 litters of puppies on the streets, Mina needs a warm, loving, joyful place to call home. She needs someone to love her, the way that she loved her babies, other dogs, and humans alike. Mina has been such a very easy, wonderful dog to foster! She is house-trained, well behaved, doesn’t chew on things, and is pretty mellow- but also fun and playful. Once you see her big brown eyes, and big ears- your heart will melt.
