Hi! I’m (David) Bowie and I’m an incredibly playful pup!

History

I was found stray in KY and landed in a dismal high-kill shelter, but it was my very good luck that the staff couldn’t stop laughing about my natural fuzzy Mohawk on the top of my head, and my sweet, playful demeanor! They worked hard to save my life…they called their rescue contact and pleaded for me to get saved, and that person called CDR and next thing I knew I was on a long car drive to central NY and into this awesome foster program!

Personality

I am a delightful, extremely fun and playful little guy who is a bundle of busy, silly energy by day and plenty of affection and snuggles in the evening!

I love to play! I love adventure! I love walks and hikes–and in true beagle fashion, I have my nose to the ground the entire time, exploring all of the amazing smells…so fantastic! I must be on leash at all times, I do not seem like the kind of dog who can be trained to be safe off-leash. Way too high of a “chase” drive, but that’s ok, because I have learned to walk, hike, and jog very nicely on leash!

Other than being with great people, my favorite thing is playing with other dogs, I LOVE playing with other dogs! I would love to live near to a dog park where I could go and play all the time, or to live with someone who wanted to put me in doggy daycare so I could play-play-play all day long!

I am very snuggly in the evenings! I really like sitting on your lap or cuddling next to you on the couch, and I enjoy being in a big human-and-doggy-and-kitty snuggle pile for TV time! I am super happy when my foster parents get home– I make these cute whining noises to express my delight, and then I’m all about giving them kisses and getting belly rubs. I am very affectionate and love interacting with people! I love playing tug-of-war and figured out the polite human rules very quickly (those are…when my foster mom stops tugging, I then give her the tug toy, sit down, and then she will start playing with me again!).

I am a great hiking and walking buddy—I would love someone who liked to do leashed trail hikes–and I also like the water very much! There was a river on a recent long hike we took and I waded right in it! It wasn’t deep enough to swim, but if it had been, my foster mom thinks I might have had a nice swim for myself! Long retractable leashes give me plenty of room to run and swim and play!

I am a very smart little guy. My foster parents are great at positive training, and they say that I catch on very quickly and am very treat motivated, which makes me easy to train. They say that I respond extremely well to positive reinforcement training—as long as you show me that it’s fun and worth it to do what you ask, then I will do it very happily and enthusiastically.

I am great in the car, am totally housebroken, and am fine in a crate at night (next to your bed). I am left free in part of the house during the day with the other 4 dogs, with access to a doggy door and a fenced in yard. I have not been destructive at all in this situation, but note that when I was first temporarily fostered in a home with no other dogs to play with, I was quite destructive! This is how we know that I must go to a home with at least one other playful dog because I am just wonderful and totally happy and nondestructive as long as I have a fun doggy sibling!

Cohabitation

I love people! Haven’t met a person yet that I don’t like. I do have sharp little teeth and nails though, and since I’m very playful and still have the puppy “everything goes in my mouth” propensity, best that I not live with kids under 8. Don’t want to playfully gnaw on their tender arms or legs and have them not like it!

I am terrific with other dogs!! I LOVE playful young dogs, and I am best buddies with the 6-month old male husky mix in my foster home. I am very nice to the elderly female Italian greyhound, and am solid friends with both the senior male Black Lab mix and the female Border Collie mix. The Border Collie mix is named Bees, and I’m told that some of you may know her because she used to be a CDR dog (before she got adopted here by my foster parents)! Anyways, Bees is a super cool girl, but she is a bit hot and cold with me. Sometimes she is very fun and wants to play, and other times she is a total grumpy bear. Good thing is though, I don’t take it personally when she’s a grumpy bear, I just mind my business and play with the other dogs.

There are cats in my foster home and I’m perfectly good with them, but mostly uninterested. Occasionally I will go up and sniff one of them, but truth be told, I find cats BORING!!

Medical

I am in great health!!

Summary

I am the most fun, affectionate, smart and cool little guy! I need to find a forever family with at least one other young playful dog (though the more the merrier!) and people who like to be active outdoors, taking walks or hikes or doing agility! Come and meet me, we will have so much fun together!!

If you are interested in adopting me, please fill out an online adoption application and live close to Ithaca , Syracuse, Binghamton, Rochester, or Elmira. We do home visits on every applicant, and can’t do home visits where we don’t have local volunteers.
