History and Why I am looking for a new home

I used to live with a family with lots of land and got to run around all day off-leash without a fence. It was great! Unfortunately, this also meant that sometimes I ran on to other people’s farms in the area since I didn’t know the difference and some of our neighbors weren’t very happy about this. One farm that had chickens on it got me so excited that I picked one up with my mouth, and the farmer was not very pleased with this and neither was the local animal control! My owners were at a loss for what to do since they are expecting a baby and so did not have the resources or time to keep me from running around, so they thought euthanasia was going to be necessary and had made an appointment at the vet. Fortunately, someone at the vet clinic heard my story and went looking for a new home for me, and once Cayuga Dog Rescue heard about my situation they saved the day—I am SUCH a lucky girl!!! I’ve been with my foster parents since late August and can’t wait to find a great forever home! I am learning how to walk on a leash now and am doing a great job!

Personality

And that’s a really, really good thing because I absolutely love everyone and everything around me. I am so sweet, and joyful, and affectionate, and playful…it’s really staggering to think that anyone that knew me for even a moment could have seriously considered putting me to sleep.
I love to be affectionate, so if you lean in close I’ll give you kisses!! My favorite couch-sharing position is with my head on your lap, which seems to make people make this sound: “Awwwwwww.” I’m really tolerant, so I won’t mind if you want to lie all over me, too, as long as you’re gentle about it! I love to sleep next to you at night, but be warned– I sleep like a rock! This means you better claim your space right at the outset, because once I’m settled in, it’s kind of hard to move me! But on the good side…I don’t move around much and I’m happy to sleep in as late as you like (you know, within reason!)!
I LOVE to sit on the couch with you, snuggling and hanging out and sharing time. I also have a tendency to follow you from room to room—not in an anxious way, just really to make sure you don’t get lost and because I just like you, and I enjoy being your buddy in all things!
I’m a pretty smart girl, and I can’t wait to impress you with my great skills—I know “sit,” “down,” “roll over,” and “paw” and I’m quickly learning “get a toy!” Which reminds me…I LOVE to play! When you come home, I’ll go “get a toy!” and be very excited to play with you right away! One of my favorite games is fetch, and I’m pretty much a pro. I can fetch toys thrown inside or Frisbees thrown into a lake!
That reminds me—I LOVE to swim! And unlike some less well-mannered Labs, I do not chew on things that I’m not supposed to! I only chew on my toys, which I’m told is super fantabulous! I’m also fully potty-trained so you don’t have to worry about that. I can get pretty distracted by things like reflections or flashlights, and sometimes you might need to redirect my energy to get me focused again. I love to chase critters, so it’s important that I’m on a leash whenever we go on walks. We know from my past that I love to go run off onto other people’s properties, and that’s not good for anyone!

Cohabitation

I’m great with everyone I meet. I love every nice adult I’ve met, and I’ve played well with young kids (I love giving them kisses!).
I’ve played with other dogs and enjoyed that very much! I like to run around with them and play tug-of-war! I used to live with a cat, and I let her lay on me, but since I do like to chase, if a cat ran from me I would probably want to chase it. So, I’m good for dog-savvy cats, but not for fearful cats!

Medical

I’m in fantastic overall health! However, everyone has noticed that despite how much I love to run around, I also limp on both back legs. Two Cornell vets took a quick looksee and both guess that I have old bilateral cruciate tears in my back knees. I am scheduled for a full workup with the Orthopedic specialists at Cornell in the beginning of October to confirm the diagnosis and see what we can do to get me better. Truth be told, if it were up to me, I would run around all day despite my knee issues, but I admit that when I’m more active during the day, I limp at the end of the day. For now, I am doing more swimming and less running. My foster parents are great at reminding me that jumping up on to the bed/into a car is not the best idea for my legs right now—so I have figured out that if I wait patiently they will pick me up so I don’t have to jump!

Summary

I’m awesome!! I’m a loving, energetic girl who is full of love and life and play and adventure who is looking for a place to spend time playing and relaxing with my new owners. Could that be you?
