Suzie Hi!
My name is Suzie, and I am a very, very sweet, 10-month old, female Yellow
Lab. I was homeless, terrified, and scavenging around a central NY town
for months and months when a super nice couple took the time (several
months!) to earn my trust. They became my sweet friends, and they fed me
and let me sleep under their deck, but couldn't bring me inside because
their dog doesn't like other dogs. Even sweet ones like me!
Luckily though, they contacted CDR and got me into an incredible foster
home.
Though I was pretty shy and scared at first, I have made amazing strides.
I love my foster mom and dad, and follow them around as much as I can.
I trust them, love their attention and affection, and love learning the
new things that they are teaching me. I do a great Sit, am learning
Down and Stay, am crate-trained, and now fully housebroken. That's
pretty impressive, don't you think?
There are 3 other dogs in my foster home with whom I get along really
well. I didn't know anything about playing or toys when I first
came, but the youngest dog here (she's about my same age) has taught me
loads! We retrieve balls together and play tug-of-war and have a
great time trotting around in the fenced yard. There are also cats
here, and I'm just fine with them.
I love going for leash walks, and love relaxing around the house. I
have a very gentle temperament, am fairly quiet, and am a super fast
learner. For example, I learned that if I lay down while my foster
mom is making dinner then I will get some treats but if I jump on the
counter I won't.
I have also learned to be in a crate when mom and dad are away, and also
for sleeping (next to mom and dad's bed), and am fine with that as long as
mom or dad or one of the other dogs is around. I do not like to be
left all alone which my foster mom found out when she left a video camera
on while she went for a walk with my foster siblings. I barked in my
crate for a full 30 minutes and was very upset about being left behind.
When my humans leave me with the other dogs to keep me company, I am
perfectly fine and can lay down and have a nap. This kind of anxiety
is pretty common for dogs who have been homeless, and might get better
over time, but the rescue folks are requiring that my adoptive home have
at least 1 other friendly dog in it, to ease my transition, and help me to
be happy, calm, and successful in my adoptive home.
I'm getting spayed at the end of November, and will be ready for my
forever home sometime after that! I know I look a little skinny in
my photos...I had a bad case of parasites, but it's all treated now and
I've begun putting weight on again. I will probably be about 65-70
pounds when I get to my ideal weight and finish growing.
I'm healthy and up to date on vaccines and ready to meet you! If you
are interested in me, please fill out an adoption application today and
live within 30 minutes of Ithaca, OR very near to Syracuse, Owego, or
Binghamton. The rescue folks do home visits on every applicant, and
can only do them where there are trained volunteers.
Because of the high rate of accidents between dogs and
young children, we rarely adopt out our dogs or puppies into homes with
young children. If you think your particular situation might warrant an
exception, please feel free to inquire with us.
