Bear

Hi!  My name is Bear, (as in, "Cuddle Bear," "Honey Bear," "Silly Bear," and "Pooh Bear"), and I am a super sweet, friendly, affectionate and silly 7-8 year old, 90-pound, neutered, male, Yellow Lab.  Man, have I been through a lot!

First let me tell you what I'm like, and then I'll tell you my rescue story.  I am a super chill guy and I love to hang out with people.  Getting petted and attention is fantastic, but if you are busy, I am perfectly happy to lie contentedly at your feet.  My foster mom says I am the best house guest she’s ever had.  I have perfect house manners and get along really well with everyone (both human and canine) that I meet.

I am currently living with several other dogs ranging from the young, energetic type to the small, elderly type, and I get along great with all of them.  I actually seem to especially enjoy small dogs and I play very gently with them.  Unfortunately I like kitties "a bit too much" so I will have to stick to human and canine companions in my adoptive home.

I absolutely love to go on walks, especially in the woods where there are lots of great things to sniff.  When it is time to go for a walk I get a big grin on my face and do this cute little dance!  Despite my love of walks, I don’t actually need much exercise - - just one or two short walks a day is plenty for me and my aging hips.  If you are looking for a serious hiking/running companion I am unfortunately not your dog, but if you want someone to accompany you on evening strolls I'm your boy!

Which brings me to my rescue story.  I was found at a regional NY shelter, where I had been for some time and  was clearly in a good deal of pain.  I limped around and had a hard time getting comfortable sitting or laying or getting up.  Since the shelter wasn't able to provide veterinary treatment for me, CDR took me into foster care.  They got me all checked out by some great vets, and I was put on wonderful pain meds for my legs which have given me a new lease on life.  I can jump into car seats now, can trot around in the yard, and love my daily walks.  During the veterinary evaluation, it was also discovered that I was heartworm positive.  I went through treatment in February and am now heartworm free and feeling great!

This all means that I'm ready to look for my forever home!  So if you are looking for a mellow and endlessly happy companion to greet you when you get home everyday I would love to come live with you.  If you love big goofy Labs, but don’t want all the crazy energy, chewing etc. that we Labs are so famous for, I am your man!  If you have other dogs I bet we will be friends in no time, but I would also be perfectly happy as your only canine companion.  I also hope for someone who will keep up with my medicine.  I never want to go back to the pain I was in before, and with joint building supplements and pain meds, I can be spry for a very long time.

If you are interested in adopting me, please fill out an adoption application today and live EITHER within 30 minutes of Ithaca OR very close to Syracuse, Binghamton, or Owego. We do home visits on every applicant, and can't do home visits where we don't have local volunteers.

Because of the high rate of accidents between dogs and young children, we rarely adopt out our dogs or puppies into homes with young children.  If you think your particular situation might warrant an exception, please feel free to inquire with us.
