Birdie has passed away.

Birdie passed away from a probable brain tumor. She was such a great dog. She survived heartworm disease and was adopted by Ann and Bill, who gave her a MOST amazing home for the rest of her life. She passed away in July 2010. She had SUCH a huge heart, was SUCH a sweet, wonderful girl.

Hi everyone! My name is Birdie, and I am a super sweet, mellow, and happy 8 year-old, spayed, female Black Lab mix! I was rescued from a high-kill shelter in Ohio, and I am the most grateful girl around. The folks in the Ohio shelter felt so sad about me...they described me as very depressed and a "lost soul" who seemed to have given up on life. It's true, I was really upset and confused about being in a big noisy shelter and was lonely and sad. But don't worry, though the long transport here was difficult, wow, was it worth it! I am so happy now!! I am in a very loving foster home with a terrific mom, and I am getting so spoiled with love and attention, I am just beside myself. I am also sharing the house with 2 other dogs and a bunch of cats, and we all get along really well. I'm sweet and laid back with everyone, so everyone is nice to me! I love going for walks and have discovered the joys of couches and beds. I think couches and beds are the best things ever invented and am so happy that dogs are allowed on them in my foster home. :) When my foster mom comes home from work, my little tail goes all a-waggin' and I give her a big "play bow" to let her know how happy I am to see her! Apparently it is quite adorable, as it makes her laugh every time. I'm housebroken and just a pleasure to have around.

The bummer news is that once I got here and went to see the nice veterinarian, we found out that I am heartworm positive. Yikes, scary. I'm not worried though...we just did extensive bloodwork and chest x-rays and the vet says that everything looks good, which means we are catching the heartworm very early, and I should respond to treatment quite well. I'm scheduled to have the 2- day treatment in early February, which is going to be somewhat painful and generally icky but it's going to make me all better so I have a very positive attitude about it. I overheard the rescue lady talking about how expensive it is...probably more than $700 and that is with our terrific rescue discount. So if anyone is able to send in a donation to help pay for my treatment, I would be very touched and very appreciative.

We guess that I will be ready for my forever home by the end of February, but if you might be interested in me, please fill out an application now! If you are to be my mom or dad, you could even visit me during my recovery period, so by the time I go home with you, we would already be great friends.

Because of the high rate of accidents between dogs and young children, we rarely adopt out our dogs or puppies into homes with young children.  If you think your particular situation might warrant an exception, please feel free to inquire with us.
