Pupper Has Been Adopted!

Hi! My name is Pupper and I am the sweetest, most easygoing, and loving dog you might ever meet!

History:

I was found as a stray when I was about 2 years old. When the nice lady who found me couldn’t find my owners, she offered to take care of me! She was very good to me, and I got along beautifully with her, her other dog, and the 6 year old girl in the house. I kept getting these terrible skin and ear infections though, and after 2 years of her veterinarians being unable to get me well, she ran out of money for my care. I was in rough shape. The infections were so out of control, it looked like I had dipped my head, ears, and paws in battery acid, and there were crusty scabs all over my whole body. My ears were so inflamed and swollen, it made people cringe to see them. Suffice to say, I was pretty darned uncomfortable. My mom asked Cayuga Dog Rescue if they could take me, get me well, and find me a new forever home with folks who would make sure I could stay well. They said “for a dog as wonderful as Pupper…absolutely!”

Personality:

People are raving about me! I’m hearing things like “Pupper is probably the nicest dog I have ever had my hands on (said by a rescue person who has fostered and owned literally hundreds of dogs!),” and “it is stunning how sweet this dog is,” and “this is the most easygoing and contented dog I have ever met.”

I just love every person, and spend pretty much every waking moment smiling and gently swish-swishing my tail in happy delight about every little thing. I love attention, affection, and being with you. If you want to pet me, I am over the moon. If you want to snuggle on the couch with me, I’m there. If you want to tell me about your day, I’m interested. But I’m also perfectly happy hanging out relaxing on a nice dog bed when you are busy.

I love going for walks very much, I find the smells really fascinating, and it’s just fun to be out and about, especially with you! And I’m a pretty good walker, I don’t pull much on the leash! And when the weather is rotten and cold and rainy, it’s ok with me if you keep our walks short. I am told that some Labs go bonkers when they don’t get a lot of daily exercise, but I’m not like that. They say that in the dictionary, under the word “easygoing,” there is a photo of me!

Cohabitation:

I love being around and playing with other dogs, but would probably be just fine as an only dog too (especially if I had occasional playdates or maybe got to go to a dog park once in a while)! Right now, I have a couple of best doggy buddies in my foster home and we pal around and play in the fenced yard every day.

I love every nice adult whom I have met, and was terrific with the 6-8 year old human girl in my last home. I might be fine with younger kids, too, I am such a gentle soul, but since we haven’t checked that out yet, we can’t say for sure.

I am fabulous with cats too!

Medical:

Since coming to the CDR foster program, I have had a lot of medical assessment (and was an incredibly good boy for all of it)! I saw the great vets at Cornerstone Vet Clinic, the specialists at the Dermatology Clinic at Cornell Vet Hospital, and had a consult with a vet at Smithridge Vet Clinic (near NYC), who are a top holistic veterinary practice.

Here’s what we found out…I have an autoimmune disorder called Pemphigus Foliaceus. It is NOT contagious in any way. It is thought to be a lifelong disorder, but one that that can usually be managed well with the right medications. Here is a link to the WikiVet page if you’d like to see a bit about it: http://en.wikivet.net/Pemphigus_Foliaceus

The vets have me on multiple antibiotics to clear up my skin infections and great ear medication to clear up my inflamed and infected ears, and that, along with a couple of FABULOUS feeling baths, have me feeling and looking better than I have in literally years! Yay!!!!!!!!! I was also just started on some steroid medicines (and some other medicines to minimize any ill effects of the steroids), and will soon start on a host of holistic supplements to boost my overall well-being. I have been on a grain-free food, but am going to switch to a new grain-free food (Duck and Potato, per the holistic vet) which is supposed to be the least allergenic kibble on the market.

So far my response to the treatment has been fantastic, which is a wonderful prognostic sign. I will likely need to be maintained on various medicines and supplements for the rest of my life, which means I need an adopter who has comfortable financial resources. My medicines aren’t super expensive, but I will absolutely be a more costly dog than one without an autoimmune disorder. Since I had to leave my last home because they didn’t have the finances to take care of me, I want to make sure that doesn’t happen again.

If you can do that for me, I will be a very happy, very healthy, and very grateful doggy for the entirety of my life!

Summary:

I am possibly the nicest dog you will ever meet! If you have comfortable financial resources and a love of dogs with hearts of gold and spirits made of rainbows and stars, I might be your new family member!

If you are interested in adopting Pupper, please fill out an online adoption application and live close to Ithaca , Syracuse, Binghamton, or Elmira. We do home visits on every applicant, and can't do home visits where we don't have local volunteers.

Because of the high rate of accidents between dogs and young children, we rarely adopt out our dogs or puppies into homes with young children.  If you think your particular situation might warrant an exception, please feel free to inquire with us.
