Hi! My name is Atticus. I am a 6 year old, beautiful, lovable Nova Scotia Duck-Tolling Retriever (Duck Toller for short).

Personality:

Hello! My name is Atticus. I am a Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever (Duck Toller for short). I’m kind of like a Golden Retriever, but smaller. I love hikes, car rides, playing tag, and playing with other dogs. I love wading in water too, although I get a little scared in deep water.

More than anything I love spending time cuddling or playing with people. I generally stay in the same room as my owners, but I don’t beg for attention all of the time. I am calm and relaxed most of the time, but when the occasion calls for it I am fun loving and playful. I have free reign of the house, don’t eat food off of the counters or floors (unless told to), don’t chew, and I keep myself very clean.

Training:

I am very good at being obedient (I’ve had lots of practice and training). I behave great off-leash (although I do go on leashed walks sometimes), and usually stay within 20 yards of my owners on hikes when I’m not asked to heel. I play outside in our yard by myself and don’t even need a fence to stay in the yard! In fact, my owners don’t ever have to pooper scoop their yard because I will only go in tall, weedy grass. I know all of the commands (sit, come, heel, stay, lay down, shake); even giving hugs, which I love! I am an active dog, and am most happy when I get lots of exercise. I am still well behaved without much exercise, but I prefer to be active. The most important thing that I need to be happy is attention. I am used to having someone home with me most of the day, although I’ve done well when I’ve been left for long periods of time. I love to spend my evenings cuddling up with people.

History:

My owners don’t know much about my first 4 years. I was found abandoned in a hunting camp in Elmira, NY. I was found by a woman who took me in with her 5 dogs while she figured out what home would be best for me. She found my current owners, who have loved me and treated me like their child. We go on hikes regularly, and I play in the yard by myself and with my family everyday. My owners have had several children visit over the past 2 years, and I’ve done great with them. I love playing tag and other games with older kids (8 and over). I’m also really great with senior citizens.

When a baby arrived though, I struggled with feeling replaced and not getting as much attention. The toddler isn’t gentle with me and doesn’t play the way I like to play, which makes me uncomfortable, nervous, and unhappy. I have gotten growly with him since he started crawling, and the little guy just doesn’t seem to understand that this means that he needs to give me my space. I try to get away, but he just keeps coming at me. We’re all worried that this is an accident waiting to happen, and since I am not happy with a toddler in my home (and there are plans for another one), we’ve all decided, hard as it is, that finding me a new home with kids over the age of 8 would be wise and make me the happiest.

Hopes:

I would really like to find a home where there are fun, loving, wonderful people who love to play, snuggle, and go for hikes and walks, and have no little children (under 8 or so). I need a home where I will be able to get lots of exercise through walks or hikes and playtime outside. It would be best for me to be able to have free reign of the house when left alone (I’m super house-broken and never chew things up!). I am loving and affectionate, so I really need a home where people will love me and cuddle with me. My motto is, “All I need is love!” (Well, maybe also good food and treats and toys and soft things to lay on and great vet care!)

If you are interested in adopting Atticus, please fill out an online adoption application and live close to Ithaca , Syracuse, Binghamton, or Elmira. We do home visits on every applicant, and can't do home visits where we don't have local volunteers.

Because of the high rate of accidents between dogs and young children, we rarely adopt out our dogs or puppies into homes with young children.  If you think your particular situation might warrant an exception, please feel free to inquire with us.
