Sophie Has Been Adopted!

Hi! My name is Sophie, and I am an adorable, sweet, and very affectionate girl!

Background:

I was picked up as stray in a very rural, poor area of TN and nobody every came looking for me at the shelter. I had been there for quite a while, with no adoptive interest, which no one understood, because I am so incredibly sweet and calm and lovely! They think it’s because I’m mostly black, and we black dogs are always the last to get adopted out of the shelters.

Even though I was in a rough shelter, the staff were totally committed to getting me into rescue and not putting me to sleep, because they all loved me so much. They told me I was the “staff favorite” of all of the dogs there, which I think was quite an honor! They told this to the folks at Cayuga Dog Rescue, so when they next had an opening, they brought me right up. They say they love the staff favorites, because we are always the best dogs ever!

Personality:

I’m a super sweet and affectionate girl! I really enjoy being near my people, though not at all in a clingy or needy way. I calmly follow my foster parents when they relocate from room to room, just because it feels nicer to be hanging out with them, and if I’m nearby, it’s more likely that they will reach over and give me a pet or a snuggle! I have shiny, lovely, soft fur, white “socks,” a pretty white patch on my chest, and what I’m told are unusually adorable ears!

When I first came, I was a bit quiet and shy, but in the few weeks that I have been here, my trust has grown and I have blossomed into a beautifully affectionate and sweet girl. I now cuddle on the couch next to my foster parents, lay my head in their laps for petting, gently put my paw on their knee to ask for petting, and most recently, roll over for belly rubs! I like to give little gentle kisses to my people, which they say feels very, very nice. I love having my ears and neck scratched and loved pretty much any affection you’d like to give.

For such a young dog, I’m wonderfully laid back and calm in the house. No hyper crazy behavior like lots of dogs my age! I am left to roam freely when my people are at work, and I am a perfect lady…I never do anything that I’m not supposed to, and of course am housebroken. I sleep quietly all through the night, either on the couch or in my open crate, but would be interested in sleeping in your room if you wanted. I am pretty quiet…the only time I reliably bark is when someone comes to the door, and then I stop once they are inside. It’s mostly just to let you know someone is there…I’m sort of like a furry doorbell!

When I am outside, I can be more energetic, and enjoy galloping around the fenced yard, searching for woodchucks and squirrels, and visiting the dog park! I love going for walks and am also doing some jogging with my foster dad. He says I wasn’t a great jogger in the beginning…I would serpentine in front of him and it was a feat for him not to trip and fall! But I’ve got the hang of it now, and trot alongside of him very nicely, which he says is fantastic! He gives me all the credit, but I know he was a kind and patient teacher! I have a pretty good prey drive, so I need to be wearing a Sense-ation harness for walking or jogging, (http://www.amazon.com/SENSE-ation-No-Pull-Dog-Harness-Purple/dp/B0013K0H4K/ref=sr_1_1?s=pet-supplies&ie=UTF8&qid=1415283309&sr=1-1&keywords=sense-ation+harness), but as long as I wear one of those, I’m good (and I’m sure my leash walking will continue to improve with more positive training!).

As for training, I am learning all the basics and my foster parents say I am smart! I can sit and wait (a bit) and just learned to “give paw.” They say it’s extra adorable because I give them my paw, they give me a treat, and then I often give them a gentle kiss on their hand to say thank you!

I love to fetch balls in a fenced area, and am *pretty good* about bringing the ball back to you! I love to chew on bones in the house, and am very sweet about sharing them with the other little dog in our home.

Cohabitation:

I am great with other dogs, big and small. I am living with an adorable little female Pug/Chihuahua mix. We got along great right from the start, and after a few weeks, have now begun to play! We play bow each other a lot, and then dart/chase each other around, doing pretend “play” nips to each other that cracks us both up! I’m good with all the other dogs at the dog park, though don’t really get to playing much with other dogs until I’ve had a chance to get to know them a bit.

I have a decent prey drive, and view cats the same way I view squirrels and chipmunks, so I may not live with cats, and need to always be on leash so I don’t harm an outdoor cat please.

Medical:

I had a terribly painful, deep ear infection when I was picked up as stray, that I had clearly been suffering with for quite a long time. The shelter treated me for it and it cleared up, but soon after they stopped the medication, it returned. Our great Ithaca vets (Cornerstone Vet Clinic) put me back on the miracle ear ointment, and said I needed it daily for a while, then every other day, then a few days a week, and then weekly. I’m at the point that I only need it once a week, but will need that to continue for the better part of a year, so that the infection really can’t return. I don’t mind you putting it in my ears, now that they aren’t so painful!

That’s the only issue with my health! I am in terrific, healthy shape in all other ways!

Summary:

I am all all-around wonderful girl! I am excited to find my forever home, and hope very much for a loving kind person or people, who want to share love and fun and affection with me, and make me an essential part of family life. I need walks every day, and am happy to go for short jogs with you too! I would love a canine sibling, but as long as you are around a decent amount, and would get me some dog-dog socialization with your friends’ dogs or at the dog park, I would be fine as an only dog too!

If you are interested in adopting Sophie, please fill out an online adoption application and live close to Ithaca , Syracuse, Binghamton, or Elmira. We do home visits on every applicant, and can't do home visits where we don't have local volunteers.

Because of the high rate of accidents between dogs and young children, we rarely adopt out our dogs or puppies into homes with young children.  If you think your particular situation might warrant an exception, please feel free to inquire with us.
