Benjamin Has Been Adopted!

Hi everyone! My name is Benjamin (or Benji as my foster mom calls me)! I am a very sweet, playful, adorable, and loving 7 month old little puppy!

Background:

I was found stray (all alone...so sad and scared) in KY, and was going to be put to sleep at the shelter because I was sick. Thank goodness CDR said they would rescue me! My foster mom gave me the meds I need and now I’m doing great! Thank you for giving me the chance to live a full, long, happy life!

Personality:

I am an affectionate, sweet-tempered, fun, easygoing, playful (and occasionally rascally) puppy!! When I meet you, I am all waggy-waggy-waggy and happy-happy-excited, and I like to crawl all over you and give you tons of little kisses!! I have sweet breath and they are not drooly kisses, so people seem to love them. One rescue lady calls them "giggle kisses" because when i kiss her it makes her giggle!

I have a lively mind and am curious and fascinated by everything around me. I can keep pretty busy exploring the house and the fenced yard, doing "puppy investigation" and learning so much about my world. I'm growing a lot, but can still squeeze through a fence if the slats are too wide, so if you have a fenced yard (and I hope that you do!), we'll have to make sure that the slats are tight enough. We learned this the hard way at my foster home, but my foster parents are smart and loving, and the fence is now secure even for little ol' me! Like most Beagles and Hounds, I will always need to be either on a leash or in a secure fenced area because we have been bred to follow our noses to the ends of the earth. When we are following a scent, we literally don't hear you calling our name because everything in our brain goes "offline" except our scent tracking programming!

I love to run around the yard, play with toys, and play hide and seek! I play hide and seek with my toys, and sometimes with shoes that you leave laying around! I find very ingenious and special places to hide them, which makes my foster mom laugh all the time. She says it’s a great game to play!!

My foster mom says I am very smart in addition to being adorable! I am starting to learn some commands like “sit” and “come.” I would love to go to a positive training class with you and learn all kinds of great things! I never had anyone to teach me things before, and it makes me so happy to have your attention and to learn new skills.

I am quite a normal puppy in that I like to chew on all kinds of things (toys, rugs, ottomans, reading glasses, etc.), but am trying hard to learn which things I'm allowed to chew and which I'm not. The only dangerous thing I have chewed on so far is electrical cords, so my foster mom wisely moved them out of my reach. I love to play with stuffed toys and I love treats, so my foster parents can always easily distract me from things I should not get into. I am told that puppies are like babies and we have to have supervision because we are interested in knowing what everything is!

I sleep through the night in my crate next to my foster parents' bed. I ride nicely in the car in a crate or in someone’s lap. I have been to the vet several times and all the doctors and staff said I had fantastic manners and behaved so well. They also liked that I was happy to see them! I am working on house training and am doing very well with it so far. If the weather is nice and the door is open I will go out on my own and go potty. Now that the weather is getting cooler I do just fine if you take me out about every two hours during the day, and anytime I wake up from a nap. When my foster parents leave the house, I’m happy to stay gated in the kitchen, where I have plenty of room and everything I need. I can wait as much as three hours for them to come home before I need to go out. I sleep through the night but am ready to go out and go potty first thing in the morning.

I am very excited to meet people! Not shy about strangers at all, I’m just super happy to meet and make friends with everyone!

Cohabitation:

I get along really well with the older male poodle in my foster home. He is not really much for playing or hanging out with other dogs, but we share our space and do just fine. I would love to have another dog in my new home, especially one who likes to play! I don’t mind cats as long as I’m introduced to them slowly. I appreciate the chance to sniff them a bit and warm up to them. Then we get along just fine.

Medical:

As noted above, I take one medication every day. I don’t mind taking it, especially if you follow it with a little treat! For a few months I also need baths with a special shampoo that makes me feel super clean and healthy. Other than that, I am a very healthy little guy with lots of great puppy energy!

Ideal home:

On the top of my wish list is a great family for me to grow up with! I love affection and play and attention and fun and walks and hanging out and cuddling and exploring and kisses and going on adventures! I would also love a securely fenced yard so I can sniff around to my heart’s content -- I can spend an hour or more just sniffing around and it brings me a lot of pleasure :)

If you are interested in adopting Benjamin, please fill out an online adoption application and live close to Ithaca , Syracuse, Binghamton, or Elmira. We do home visits on every applicant, and can't do home visits where we don't have local volunteers.

Because of the high rate of accidents between dogs and young children, we rarely adopt out our dogs or puppies into homes with young children.  If you think your particular situation might warrant an exception, please feel free to inquire with us.
