Mango Has Been Adopted!

Hi! My name is Mango, and I am an incredibly sweet, super affectionate, 6 year old, spayed, female Shepherd mix!

Background:

I lived in TN and had really neglectful owners. They didn’t feed me much and never spent any time with me, and I was super lonely and sad and hungry. I would wander over to the neighbor’s house looking for love or food, and luckily, she was quite nice and fed me often. After a few years of watching me be so lonely and hungry, she decided to convince my neglectful owners to take me to the shelter so I could find a new, much better home. Sadly, it was a shelter with few resources, and my time there was limited, but luckily all of the staff realized what an amazing lovey dovey sweetie-pie I was, and they made it their mission to find me a good home or get me into rescue. They thought they found a nice new home for me, but the family returned me after a week, complaining that they wanted a watch dog, and I was so quiet (never barked!) and so friendly (wanted to make everyone my friend), that I wasn’t a good fit for them. That’s when my super lucky day happened and Cayuga Dog Rescue got a new foster home and she said she would take me! So, I transported up on the doggy underground railroad and here I am!

Personality:

I am incredibly sweet, affectionate and loving. I befriend and quickly fall in love every person that I meet. Seriously! I love giving kisses and getting petted and having my belly rubbed and, well, I am over the moon for any sort of attention that you would like to give me! I never had attention in my prior life and it just feels like I have gone to heaven!

My foster mom says I am a total delight to be around. I am just so happy all the time and look at you with my adorable puppy eyes and she says it just melts her heart every time. She loves to rub my ears especially, because she says they are extraordinarily soft and silky. I will let anyone and everyone give me a belly rub! When I first arrived from my long trip from TN, my foster mom and 4 other people were there to greet me…that might be overwhelming for many a dog, but not me. I went to everyone, gave them all kisses and rolled over for a belly rub! They were all so happy to see me and just laughed and rubbed my belly.

I am totally housebroken and behave well in the house-- I do not need to be confined or crated when you leave because I don’t do anything untoward. There is a cat in my foster home and I pretty much ignore her, so no problems with cats! And while I love other dogs and would be thrilled to go to a home where there was another dog, I am the only dog in my foster home and that is just fine too, as long as I get lots of love and play and walks with you! I totally love to snuggle and will spend as much time as I can right next to you.

Speaking of walks…I love to go for walks! At first I tugged pretty hard on the leash, but with a Sense-ation harness, my walking manners have improved. I am very eager to learn what you want me to do, and respond very quickly to positive training, and so far have learned Sit and Lay down! I am stimulated and curious in new situations (so have a bit more energy for investigating), but once I am feeling comfortable, I am quite calm and laid back. I do jump up a bit when I meet someone but I am just so happy! My foster mom says we have to work on that.

Cohabitation:

I love, love, love people so I am looking for a home with people!

I would be great in a home with other dogs, or as an only dog, or a home with cats!

Medical:

I am a healthy, happy girl in general, but the day before I was set to catch a ride up to Ithaca, the vets in TN found that I was heartworm positive. In case you don’t know what HW disease is…it’s carried by mosquitoes and is fatal if not treated, but luckily there is a rockin’ good treatment and once through it, I should be just fine. The great vets at Cornerstone Vet Clinic will start my treatment very soon (we are just waiting for results of initial bloodwork), and in the meantime, I have no idea that there is anything wrong with me. I’m happy and energetic and have no symptoms at all, which means that it was caught very early and there should be no lasting effects.

Ideal home:

My ideal adoptive home would have a person or people with a very loving, gentle and fun personality who want to pet me, give me kisses, rub my belly, and take me for walks! While I am making out my wish list, a fenced in yard would be great (though not necessary), and I love soft beds, good food, and treats like hot dogs and cheese!

Summary:

I am a fabulous, super affectionate, happy girl looking for someone who wants a great companion. If you want to give belly rubs and get kisses, then I am the one for you!

If you are interested in adopting Mango, please fill out an online adoption application and live close to Ithaca , Syracuse, Binghamton, or Elmira. We do home visits on every applicant, and can't do home visits where we don't have local volunteers.

Because of the high rate of accidents between dogs and young children, we rarely adopt out our dogs or puppies into homes with young children.  If you think your particular situation might warrant an exception, please feel free to inquire with us.
