Olivia Has Been Adopted!

Hi! My name is Olivia and I am an incredibly adorable and sweet 1 year old, 37 pound, spayed female Beagle?Boxer mix!

Personality:

I am a wonderful dog, and as sweet as maple syrup. I love to give kisses, and I am good at a 'soft' mouth! My foster mom calls my kisses "angel kisses" because they are so sweet and cute. I also love belly rubs, and cuddling, and pretty much any type of affection you can give me!

I just discovered squeaky toys last night, and oh my what fun! I went to the toy box and took out about 10 different kinds of toys and played with them for a while all by myself until I got tired out and took a nap. Right now I am not allowed to play because I have a big cone on my head from eye surgery, but am looking forward to returning to toys when it is off!

I am very laid back for a 1 year old "pup"! I tend to sleep most of the day, but I also enjoy a nice long walk. I am doing all of my business outdoors now (only had a few accidents when I first arrived!), which I am pretty proud of! I sleep in a crate at night next to my foster mom's bed and I am getting used to it (though I would prefer to sleep in the bed with my people because I love my people and want to be close to them!!).

One thing that I really need in a new home is someone who can work with me to build my self-esteem. We aren't sure why, but loud noises seem to make me so very scared -- on walks, this means I might jump at car doors shutting, people coming out of houses, my own shadow, and so on. My foster mom though thinks I am gaining confidence every day, so she thinks with the right person I will overcome my fears wonderfully!

I truly love love love my people, and I will follow them around the house and do everything I can to be close to them. I have to take medicine right now (I just had surgery at Cornell for a "cherry eye,") and all my foster mom has to do to get me to have the drops put in my eye is to call me into her lap--I just collapse with joy and she puts the drops right in! My utter love for people's affection means though that if there is another dog in the house, sometimes I need a gentle reminder that I need to share my people! In my current foster home, though, which has multiple dogs, my mom is very good at telling me when it is *my* turn to be petted and that lets me know that I am still loved even if my brother is getting a moment in the spotlight. And because my doggy brother is so kind and mellow, it makes it easy for me to trust him, too!

I am very young, but I am already learning sit, stay, and 'leave it.' A gentle 'no' in a soft voice is really all I need -- any more is overkill! I will need a home where my people understand that I find many things scary, but they can grow my confidence and really make me see that the world isn't so bad.

Co-habitation:

I really need a quiet, calm house so that I will feel safe and secure and be able to fully blossom. I have been in two foster situations since being in Cayuga Dog Rescue (the second because it was closer to Cornell Vet School where I was receiving treatment on my eye and also because the first foster mom broke her ankle and so was having a hard time taking care of me!). In both places it seemed clear that I would not be suited for a family with small children because of my sensitivity to noise. I find it stressful to even walking past noisy playgrounds! I might be okay with the right sort of cats, but it is something that is going to need further testing. When they cat tested me in TN and KY before I came up here, I didn't pay much attention, but in my first foster home, I stared intently at the cats quite a lot, and we're not sure what that means!

As far as other dogs go, I am currently in a foster home with a big, mellow male dog and we are totally fine. My foster mom made the ground rules very clear from the get-go -- no getting jealous! -- and has made sure to do basic things to ensure happy cohabitation, like feeding us separately, and keeping me off of "prized" territories like the bed and couch until I get acclimated. Since she set the ground rules and did a great job of introducing us, I like to sleep nose-to-nose with my doggy brother during the day and even will sneak him kisses on the nose. We take our walks together, and having a big older brother makes me feel safe. I'm also helping him explore our backyard, since I have a much better nose than he does! I would probably work great in a household with an older, mellow dog.

With or without another dog, I would be best in a home with an experienced dog owner who uses positive training techniques.

Background:

I came into the rescue with cherry eye, a condition which required surgery. It is very unlikely that I will get this condition again, as it is most common in puppies, but it helps to indicate I'm part Beagle as it is very common in that breed!

Summary:

I'm the sweetest girl! Can't wait to meet you! If you want a young, adorable, insanely honey-filled pup, but would prefer to avoid the rambunctious crazy-crazy of most 1 year old dogs, I am your girl! Hoping for a home with very affectionate and loving and gentle people!!

If you are interested in me, please read about the adoption process today and live EITHER within 30 minutes of Ithaca OR very close to Syracuse, Binghamton, or Owego. We do home visits on every applicant, and can't do home visits where we don't have local volunteers.

Because of the high rate of accidents between dogs and young children, we rarely adopt out our dogs or puppies into homes with young children.  If you think your particular situation might warrant an exception, please feel free to inquire with us.
