Personality
I am super mellow, very relaxed, extremely people-loving, incredibly affectionate, and adorable! I am a big mushball…I challenge you to find any dog who loves affection as much as I do. I utterly, and with my whole being, love being petted, love laying next to you, love laying at your feet, love snuggling, and love to get kissed!
I have normal level of energy for a boy of my age…I love a good long walk and love to run around for short periods of time, but also do plenty of relaxing and napping! I am great company for you when you are working or relaxing…I will just stay by your side and remind you to take brief breaks every hour or so (did you know that petting a dog is the BEST way to take a mini-break?). I love adults and kids alike, and nicely sniff infants but don’t really pay them any attention!
I’m a pretty quiet dog…I rarely bark and only occasionally make a little piggy-grunting sound when I am trying to get your attention!
Favorite Activities
My favorite thing is hanging out with my family and getting affection and attention! I’m a very social dog, and I love the company of people. I like to sleep near my mom’s feet when she’s working on her computer. When I nudge her foot, she’ll rub my belly for a minute, then I fall back asleep. Sometimes when we’re playing, and I’m lying on my back, I use my front paws to play patty-cake with her. That makes everyone laugh and talk about how cute I am!
I love going out for walks with you so much… I’ll take any kind of walk, but my favorite kind is in the woods. I love to be off- leash, and as long as you call me back to you regularly (and give me a treat for doing so!), I am trustworthy off-leash. All of the neighbors know that I like to say hi to everyone and get pets when we are out taking a walk, and they are usually happy to comply! When I am at a safe off-leash location (like hiking trails and such), I crack my people up. Once I’ve run around a bit, I then like to meditate (y mom calls it a Zen thing). I’ll sit very still under a tree and just sniff the air with my full and rapt attention. I like to sit and stare at waterfalls too. I might be thinking deep thoughts. Everyone says it’s very soothing to watch.
I also enjoy visiting the dog park! When I go to the dog park, I’ll run around for a bit and sniff things, including other dogs, and I also like to say hi to the other people there. Usually this will get my ears scratched and my back rubbed!
Cohabitation
I totally love living with other dogs. I must share my house with another dog. I currently go to doggy daycare a few days a week and the staff always talk about how well I behave. I’m not especially fond of young puppies that keep jumping on me a lot, but otherwise, all dogs are my friends!
I am great living with cats. Lived with a bunch in my foster home and am now living with 2. We share the sunny section of the carpet and take a sunbath together.
I get along with all people!!!
Background:
I was picked up as a stray in rural KY and landed in a very overcrowded shelter. I quickly became a shelter staff favorite, and so was chosen by Cayuga Dog Rescue to come into their wonderful foster program! This was early last summer, and I spent about 9 months in a fabulous foster home with another great dog and a bunch of cats. I had some separation anxiety especially early on in my transition here, which got better (pretty much completely) over time and was clearly helped immensely by the presence of the other dog in the house.
A wonderful family wanted to adopt me just before Christmas, and though they had no other dog in the house, everyone thought that my separation anxiety had improved so profoundly that I would be ok as an only dog in this particular situation because my new mom worked from home much of the time.
Unfortunately, we have all learned that I really do need to have another dog in the house. I just get way too upset when left alone, and when upset, can chew things up. Not super bad but bad enough that it’s not ok, and it’s a sign that I am very stressed, and that’s no good for me. I have learned to be ok in a crate for short periods (a few hours), but I don’t really like it, so it’s not a great long-term solution. What we all think is that I need a new wonderful home with at least 1 other dog in it. I should be good then!
Medical Concerns/Special Needs
I’m in great health and up to date on all vaccines, of course! The only “medical” type thing I have is that I get car sick sometimes. I’m fine for short trips (under 20 minutes) and can be all right for longer trips if the windows are open and if I’m in the front seat (even better if I’m on the floor in the front seat) but sometimes on longer trips that hasn’t helped enough and I have gotten sick. However...recently my mom gave me a medicine called Bonine (it’s an over the counter motion sickness medicine), and we had our first long car trip (3 hours!) and I was just fine for the whole thing! Yay (for everyone)!
Summary
If I could now find my forever dream home, I’d have another dog to keep me company, and I would spend a lot of loving, sweet time with my family. I’ll be your perfect quiet and mellow companion, and I will make you smile and laugh with delight all the time!
If you are interested in me, please read about the adoption process today and live EITHER within 30 minutes of Ithaca OR very close to Syracuse, Binghamton, or Owego. We do home visits on every applicant, and can't do home visits where we don't have local volunteers.
