Smooch Has Been Adopted!

***Smooch is not a CDR dog, though one of our volunteers spent 90 minutes with him and found him to be an incredibly sweet, friendly and affectionate little guy! This is a courtesy posting for his owner, who needs to find him a new home. She has asked the rescue to evaluate applicants and choose Smooch’s placement, but Smooch will stay with her until adoption.***

Hi! My name is Smooch, and I am an incredibly sweet and adorable, loving and playful, well-mannered and silly, male Westie!

Background:

I was very lucky…I was adopted as a puppy by a wonderful local woman, and have lived with her and 2 other little dogs ever since (a great little Yorkie and a Cairn terrier). She is 93 years old now, and is increasingly having medical issues that require her to be in the hospital, and she doesn’t have anyone to take care of us during those times. She is worried for my future, and wants to find me a new home now, so she knows that I will be well cared for for the rest of my life. I’m a little nervous about such a big change, but she promises me that it will be a home filled with love and play and fun, so I’m going to be very brave about the whole thing!

Personality

I am very sweet and playful and friendly! I greet new people like they are old, dear friends, and love my old, dear friends and family as deeply as is possible. I am very affectionate and easy going, and am not demanding though I do really crave attention! I love to sit on the couch next to you, and if it’s been an hour with no petting from you, I will gently remind you that it’s time! I am not used to being picked up, but seemed to like it when the CDR volunteer did so! I love interacting with you, but if you’re busy and tell me nicely (a few times) that you don’t have time, I will go elsewhere and entertain myself.

I love belly rubs and ear scratchies, and will ask for them by standing in front of you, putting my fuzzy paws up on your legs, and giving you that winning smile that says “wanna rub my belly?…bet you might!…bet you’ll love it!”

I’m a playful little guy! I love playing with balls and squeaking toys, and am very happy if you will throw these for me! I will chase them and pounce on them and be utterly delighted about it all! I also love playing with other dogs…more on that below. I am also a big fan of raw marrow bones, and my mom gets this for us to chew on very regularly. It’s great for my teeth! I also love chicken snacks, just in case you were wondering…

I know a few commands…”drop it” (self-explanatory!), “go to your place” means I should go in my crate and “get out” means I should go into the other room. I do NOT know “sit” or “wait” or “stay” and though I have never been trained, I do come when you call me! I am comfortable in a crate, and am used to sleeping in one in the bedroom. I sleep well all night. I am very cooperative at the groomer’s. Of course, I am housebroken!

I do not bark very much, so if you are looking for a “guard dog,” I am not your guy! I’m very well-mannered in the house, I don’t chew things that I’m not supposed to, and don’t do any damage. My mom says that I am a bit of a hunter, and that I have caught both snakes and skunks in the past! The rescue folks are slightly skeptical but maybe it’s true!

I am used to having my person around all the time, and also having other dogs in the house, so am hoping for a new home with at least 1 other dog and where people aren’t gone for huge, long periods of time every single day. Everyone is afraid that it would be too stressful for me to change new homes AND find myself the only dog in the house for the first time in my life. That’s the sort of situation that could evoke an awful lot of separation anxiety and leave me upset all the time.

Favorite Activities

Playing! With you! Playing tussle and chase with other dogs! Playing with squeaky or grunting or giggling toys!!

Getting belly rubs!

I love laying in the sunshine outside (in a fenced yard) or when I am indoors, finding a patch of sunshine coming through the window, and taking a little sunbath! I also love trotting around in our fenced yard, sniffing things and watching things and just enjoying the outdoors. I love those hammock type outdoor dog beds!

I like to go for walks very much, but since my mom has not been very well for a while, haven’t had regular walks for some time. Would love to get back to that in my new home. I walk nicely on leash, though I do lunge at squirrels!

I am a very playful boy and really need a good amount of play time every day--either with you, or with other dogs (or cats)! My favorite game of the moment is “chase the light!” My foster mom has a laser pointer, and she shines it around the house and I absolutely love love love to chase it! She says that I am so smart, because I figured out that the light comes from the thing in her hand, and so sometimes I go find the thing to see if it will play with me!

Cohabitation

I am great with dogs of ALL sizes.

I am also good with parrots!

I haven’t been around small kids, so we would have to check that out.

I haven’t been around cats, so we would have to check that out too.

I haven’t been around men very much at all, but when the repair guy has come over, I was fine about it!

Medical Concerns/Special Needs

I am a healthy little guy, and am up to date on all shots.

No special needs, other than a home with at least 1 other dog and people who aren’t gone for long days, every day.

Summary

I am a wonderful, well-mannered, very affectionate, friendly, and very easygoing little Westie! It will certainly be confusing for me to leave the only home I’ve ever known, as well as my sibling dogs, but as long as my new family/person is understanding for those first few weeks, I am sure to bounce back to the loving, happy, friendly, playful little guy I am! I am looking forward to new adventures with my new person/family and am so excited to see what new wonderful things we will all share together!

If you are interested in me, please read about the adoption process today and live EITHER within 30 minutes of Ithaca OR very close to Syracuse, Binghamton, or Owego. We do home visits on every applicant, and can't do home visits where we don't have local volunteers.

Because of the high rate of accidents between dogs and young children, we rarely adopt out our dogs or puppies into homes with young children.  If you think your particular situation might warrant an exception, please feel free to inquire with us.
