Maysie Has Been Adopted!

Hi everyone! My name is Maysie, though the rescue folks laugh and say they should have called me “love magnet” because everyone I meet falls head over heels in love with me! I am an exceptionally sweet, incredibly adorable, heartbreakingly endearing, 70 pound, 8-10 year old, one-eyed, female Great Pyrenees mix, and I just utterly love everyone—human, dog, or cat—that I get to meet!

My foster mom says I am the sweetest, gentlest dog she has ever met. I love it when she gives me hugs and kisses and I let her do that a lot. I greet everyone I meet very nicely, including kids. I wag my tail almost all the time! I wag it when… you look at me, or talk to me, or rub my belly, or sit near me, or coo at me, or feed me, or walk me, or take me for a drive! My foster mom says that there is already a huge “Maysie Fan Club” here in Ithaca, and that there are already a lot of members!

I arrived in Ithaca a few weeks ago from a high-kill shelter in Tennessee. I landed there when my family didn’t want to deal with a huge mammary tumor that I had, so they gave me up, even though it was to a very overcrowded, very high-kill shelter. Super sad. Thank goodness the shelter staff all fell completely in love with me, committed to getting me into rescue, and raised money to have my tumor surgically removed and biopsied. Though the biopsy shows it was cancer, the surgeon says he got clean margins and since it’s a type of cancer that rarely recurs, we are all very hopeful that I am done with that for good!

At that point, CDR said they would be thrilled to rescue me, but as I was readying for transport on the “doggy underground railroad,” they found out I was heartworm positive! For those of you who don’t know, this is a treatable disease, but if untreated, definitely kills you. CDR said that was ok, we have great docs in Ithaca who had successfully treated other heartworm-positive dogs, so up on the “railroad” I came!

I am in a foster home with 3 other dogs and a cat, and I get along gorgeously with everyone. When my foster mom comes home, I do a hilarious, happy, barky- howly thing, greet her right at the door, and then run over to the baby gate that keeps one of her other dogs separated from the rest of us (that dog has a back injury and needs to be alone when mom’s not there to supervise her playing), stand in front of the gate, and bark to make sure my foster mom remembers to let her out!! As soon as she does so, I immediately stop barking…sweet, right? I try to be helpful. J There is a male Great Pyrenees who ecstatically howls/sings when my foster mom comes home, and recently I have started to join him in this singing “welcome home!” Too cute!

I have soft, thick, fur and I love to be petted, get kisses and have my belly rubbed. I usually like to lay close by to where you are, and I gently snore when I am sleeping J I sit very nicely for biscuits, hot dogs or cheese, and since hot dogs are my total favorite, if you used them for training, I bet I could learn anything you wanted to teach me. I am great in the car (I sit calmly and look out the window), and I like to go for walks! I walk well using a Sense-ible harness (but pull a lot if you try to walk me without using one). I am fully housebroken, sleep through the night, and generally see my job as spreading love and good cheer throughout the house.

I’ve had lots of vet appointments since arriving—I am getting such great care! Chest x-ray, and cardiac ultrasounds, and bloodwork ,and physical exams…the bottom line is that I am a very good candidate for the heartworm treatment ,which has now begun. All of the vets and rescue folks feel very hopeful that I will handle the treatment well and go on to live a long, happy, healthy, and love-filled life.

I will stay in my foster home until my heartworm treatment is completed, which will probably be in early summer, and once that is done I will be ready to transition to my forever home. My ideal adoptive home will have a fenced in yard, soft beds, good food, hot dogs, cheese, and someone with a very loving personality, who wants to pet me, give me kisses, rub my belly, and take me for walks.

The rescue folks are happy to take applications for me starting now! And even though I wouldn’t be ready to go to your home until my treatment is completed (most likely!), if you are my right new person/people, you could certainly come and visit me in my foster home between now and then. That would be super nice, so we could get to know and love each other even before I move in!

If you are interested in adopting Maysie, please fill out an online adoption application and live close to Ithaca , Syracuse, Binghamton, or Elmira. We do home visits on every applicant, and can't do home visits where we don't have local volunteers.

Because of the high rate of accidents between dogs and young children, we rarely adopt out our dogs or puppies into homes with young children.  If you think your particular situation might warrant an exception, please feel free to inquire with us.
