Jazzla (now Porter) Has Been Adopted!

Hi! My name is Jazzla (now Porter), and I am a very adorable, bouncy, curious, smart, and playful, 1 year- old, spayed female Italian greyhound mix!

Background:

I was homeless in KY and landed in a very overcrowded, kill shelter. The staff all loved me and said what a wonderful pooch I was, so CDR transported me up here to join their foster program! Yay! I got adopted very, very quickly by a fabulous family, but the truth is that I got adopted before everyone had a chance to really get to know me and my personality and what an ideal match for me would be. And while I love everyone in this family and they love me too, we’re just not enough of a great match for each other for the long-term, so we all decided that they would become my foster family. Now that we know me much better, we’ll all now look (with much more informed eyes) for the perfect forever adoptive home for me!

Personality

Incredibly sweet and friendly and playful!

I am energetic and athletic! I love to run, play, be taught things, check things out and keep an eye on everything! I love running around off-leash at the dog park (which is securely fenced) and am usually among the fastest dogs there. To see me run at top speed is nothing short of astounding! I’m a terrific playing companion with other dogs, doing lots of chase and wrestle and all sorts of amazing jumping and spinning moves. I love chasing them and I love when they chase me! At home, my foster family loves watching me play catch with a small tennis ball. I will toss the ball up with my mouth and then dance and spin and catch it again. I’m also amazingly agile at walking down narrow beams, curbs and pieces of wood.

I am spunky and a busy bee! Meaning, I’m not a "lounge around all day" kind of dog when my people are around…I like to be doing stuff. I’d much rather be checking out a fenced in backyard or watching what’s happening outside of the windows than laying around napping. Though I do that too sometimes, for sure!

I like affection and attention! If you’ve been away from the house for a while, I am very excited to see you and want to be near you or playing with you or walking around watching what you're up to. I like being petted, especially as I’m falling asleep. I have incredibly beautiful, soft fur that people love to pet. When I’m out on leashed walks, friendly people are always asking to pet me, and I happily oblige. I love to cuddle up under the covers at night and am a perfect furry hot water bottle! I have been living with 3 young kids (ages 2-7) and am great with their affection and attention except for when the 2 year old gets way too much in my face-space and crowds me in a way that makes me nervous. I don’t like that, and let her know with a warning. I like to watch bath time with the foster kids! They all laugh when I lick the drips off their wet hands or toes.

I am smart! My foster parents have taught me a bunch of things already, and they say that I am a pretty quick learner for most things! I know “sit” and am good at “wait,” and am fine going into my crate when they are away from the house. I’m also learning to lie down, come, leave it and drop! When I first came to my foster family, when we were out on walks, I would bark my head off at squirrels, as well as at most passing dogs and sometimes people, but I am getting much better at being a calmer leashed walker thanks to the work that my foster parents have been doing with me. Now I can walk all the way around our busy downtown block without any barking at all! My barking was partly due to my nervousness about people and my excitement about seeing other dogs (and frustration that I couldn't run over and meet them), but also partly (I confess) because I might be a little bit bossy!

I am nervous when meeting strangers. With certain strangers I bark until I can watch them from the safety of my crate. If I’m crated before they come inside, I quietly check them out and I warm up very nicely--5 minutes later I have a new friend. My barking is probably partly due to nervousness, partly to excitement, and also partly due to a bit of bossiness/territoriality. This should keep getting better and better over time.

I’m good in the car, at the vet and great at being groomed. I’m patient and tolerant of a lot of stuff that some dogs freak out about! I’m good at having my nails trimmed (if you give me treats while you do it), having a bath, and getting all my paws wiped off when it's muddy outside.

I can never never never be trusted off leash. My prey drive is strong and I am faster than a speeding bullet…if you let me off leash, I am not kidding…I could be in the next county in less than 5 minutes! So know that I must always be on leash or inside a securely fenced yard.

Favorite Activities

Cohabitation

I am great with people and kids, but prefer living with kids 6 and older.

I love dogs and am awesome with them.

I like to do a bit of cat chasing, much in the vein of how fun it is to chase other dogs in play. I also do some barking at them, but neither the chasing nor the barking is aggressive. If your cat is ok with this, then terrific! But if not, then pass on me…

Medical Concerns/Special Needs

I’m very healthy and have no medical issues! I had whipworms when I first came to CDR, so have been treated for that (which kills all of the adult whipworms) and need to be kept on Sentinal or Trifexis for my monthly heartworm medication for the next 6 months to make sure that the baby whipworms all get killed off for good. [Other heartworm medications like Heartguard don’t kill the baby whipworms so can’t be used for me for a while.]

Summary

I’m a fabulous, spunky, happy, very playful little girl! I am hoping for a forever adoptive home where there is at least 1 other small or medium sized, very playful other dog in it, and a fenced yard for us to run run run! I would also love a mom or dad who wants to teach me lots of good behaviors and tricks and if someone wanted to take me to agility, I would be AMAZING!!!

If you are interested in adopting Jazzla (now Porter), please fill out an online adoption application and live close to Ithaca , Syracuse, Binghamton, or Elmira. We do home visits on every applicant, and can't do home visits where we don't have local volunteers.

Because of the high rate of accidents between dogs and young children, we rarely adopt out our dogs or puppies into homes with young children.  If you think your particular situation might warrant an exception, please feel free to inquire with us.
