Logan Has Been Adopted!
Hi! My name is Logan, aka “Polar Bear,” aka “Buddha,” and I am an incredibly beautiful, soulful, loving, and affectionate, 6 year old, 95 pound, super fluffy, male Great Pyrenees! I am looking for a forever home that is built for a big dog, and has a fenced-in backyard that will protect me from my wanderlust!
- Quick Facts:
- Breed: Great Pyrenees
- Age: 6 years
- Size: 95 pounds
- Neutered: Yes!
- Good with dogs: Yep! Very friendly!
- Good with cats: Yes! I am completely indifferent--they might as well be a plant.
- Good with kids: Extremely well-mannered, and indifferent if they have high energy.
- More information: Very well-behaved, totally housebroken; I know sit, "leave it," "no," and we are working on figuring out what else I know!
Personality:
I LOVE affection. I am simply over the moon to be petted and gently hugged and kissed and petted. I can’t believe how wonderful it is to be with people. If you are sitting on the couch, I will stand next to you and be petted forever, but if you invite me, I will also crawl the top half of my body into your lap! The thing that is so rewarding about it (for you!) is not just that I am sooooo soft and have such amazingly wonderful fur to pet and massage—it’s my smile and my face. I smile almost nonstop while you are petting me, and have a look of absolute joy and contentment on my face. Kind of makes you feel good, I am told!
I am extremely true to the Great Pyrenees breed in that I have a laid back, happy, very Zen-quality about me. When people come to the door, I greet them with tail wagging -- but am so polite, and not pushy at all! When I want to ask for some petting, I might put one of my huge paws gently in your lap and look you straight in the eye, as if to say, "Please?" or, more often, "Why did you stop?"
My foster mom has never had a Great Pyr before, and she says I am the perfect ambassador for my breed. I will pretty much let you do anything to me, especially if it resembles petting. That means, you can brush me, bathe me, pull burdocks out of my fur or even trim my nails, and I will just be mellow about it, and usually even smile! I truly am a gentle giant, and after all, it’s all attention, which I love! I am incredibly even-keeled. I am not phased by loud noises or yelling toddlers, or cats hissing at me. I've even had smaller dogs growl and try to jump on me aggressively, and all I did was scoot away from them to give them their space.
I love walks. Great Pyrs were bred to guard livestock across large territories, so we love walks. My gait of choice for all things is a meandering amble -- not too slow, but not too fast. I am so happy that my foster mom is treating me to nice, long walks around downtown, and I appreciate that she's very careful to walk me in the morning and evening, when it's cooler, because the downside of my plush, thick, fluffy coat is that I can overheat in the summer. I should never be left in a car in summer (even for 3 minutes!) or out in an unshaded yard, and I dream of a home with air conditioning for the summer months!
In the house, I am quite the gentleman. I don’t grab things off counters and don’t get in the trash. I can be trusted with free run of the house when she is not here, as long as she doesn’t do something crazy like leave a turkey on the counter! When I first came, I didn’t know about couches or dog beds, but wowza, did I learn!!! Couches are…. My. Favorite. Thing. Ever! When I am not on the couch, sometimes I lay in the kitchen which is cool against my belly. If my foster mom leaves the room, I will generally follow her -- and it's so fun to hear my thump-thump-thump through the house!
My foster mom loves taking me for walks, because everyone stops to stare and ask her where she got the sweet, fuzzy polar bear! It doesn't faze me one bit, I just continue ambling along unless she asks me to stop or someone wants to pet me. Then I will politely wait for them to get their pettings in and, if they are super special, give them "air kisses." I don't really lick people, I just sort of kiss the air between us.
One small note about me -- I have special fur. So while I generally will need no more than an average dog in the exercise department, I will need regular brushing and trips to the groomers, or my fur will get knotted and I won't feel as good. But when I come home from the groomers, I sparkle due to the hollow hair shafts in my fur, EVERYBODY wants to rub their face in my coat, so that makes it all worth it! (Plus, I am a super star at the groomers, just ask anybody!)
Background:
I had been living on a wonderful farm for the past while, doing all sorts of great farm dog work, but because I am unable to stop myself from running off to explore the surrounding towns and counties (!), we are looking for a non-farm home with a hard-fenced yard, where I can spend time as part of the family indoors. Much as I love being outside and loved being a farm dog, it turns out that I love being indoors with you even more! Because of my wanderlust, all of my outside time needs to be on-leash or in a fenced yard.
- Other fun things to note:
- I tend to be kind and submissive with other dogs after initial dominance questions are settled, even though I might be way bigger than them!
- I’m smart, and if you take the time to teach me what you want me to learn, I do great.
- I love car rides!
- I am really, really good with "leave it" -- good thing for a fella my size!
- I feel anxious/ uncomfortable if I have to share food with other dogs…I much prefer to be fed separately to start, but once I feel safe, I fit right in to your pack.
- I respond very well to positive, verbal training strategies -- no physical punishment, please!
Summary:
I am a wonderful, soulful dog. I have been fortunate in that I have had some loving people in my life, but I haven’t yet found the right forever situation that is a fit for me. If you love big dogs, love giving affection, love petting and brushing dogs, like getting air kisses, are ok about walking me on leash, and are willing to do a bit of positive training with me to get me where you want me to be—I could be the most amazing dog you have ever had.
