Charley Walker Has Been Adopted!

Hi! My name is Charley Walker and I am a gentle, kind-hearted, incredibly sweet, athletic, affectionate, and loving soul. I am an 18-month old, neutered male Great Pyrenees/Hound mix, and I radiate delight and joy and happiness almost all the time!

History/Background

I was rescued from an overcrowded shelter in rural western KY and they tell me that they picked me to save because I was just SO DARNED SWEET. I love people very completely, you see, and want so much to belong to someone -- to have my very own person or people. I don't have a mean bone in my whole big, beautiful body, and am very eager to please. I know my name and *often* come when called, and love to gently lay my head against your leg and stare up at you with my big soulful eyes.

Personality

I’m a mixture of calm/gentle/sweet, and higher energy/athletic. On my calm, gentle side, I rarely jump up on people (which I’m told is extremely well-mannered of me), and when you give me attention, I stand quietly and calmly to be petted or hugged. I love being petted and gently hugged and kissed more than anything, and I give kisses back by licking your hand. I also love gently rubbing up against you and leaning into you for petting, and putting my head in your lap and gazing at you. I like to follow you around and see what you’re doing, I love to snuggle on the couch next to you (if you let me), and I am a wonderful “greeter” of any guests that you have over--just so friendly and curious and sweet! I’m happy to chill on the couch with you and watch a movie or read a book!

My foster dad leaves me free run of the house when he’s at work, and I am absolutely fine. I don’t do anything untoward (though he knows better than to leave food out anywhere that I could get it! ). He leaves me everlasting bone, chewies, or raw marrow bones to work on while he’s away, and I am happy as a clam.

On my athletic/high energy side…I need good exercise, meaning, I want it and love it and don’t seem quite right without it. I would make someone a fabulous jogging partner as I love love love to run, and do a great job of trotting right alongside you. I also love going on long brisk walks, but I warn you that if my only exercise was going to be walks, you would need to do at least a few hours a day. However, alternate ways to exercise me is to have another young, playful dog for me to chase and wrestle around with, throw balls in the fenced yard for me, or take me to the local fenced-in dogpark! If you do those things, then I don’t need so much walking or running.

Despite being part Hound, I don’t bark very much at all, except when my person leaves the house (“You forgot me! Come back!”). I might whimper when I’m lonely or hungry but only really bark (other than when you leave me alone) when something startles me, I feel like I need to sound a warning, or if I’m playing with another dog and that dog is doing a lot of barking at me in play.

My foster dad says that I am maybe the sweetest foster dog he’s ever had, and that’s saying a lot, because he has had some super sweeties! He says that I am just incredibly good hearted and good natured. He says that I crack him up when he watches me in the fenced yard playing…I chase after balls with my big galoomphing gallop, then pounce on them, and then bound around the yard with my precious prize! I try to play with my foster dad and give him loads of play bows, and then dance and prance and galoomph all around him, trying to get him to join in!

I sleep through the night on the couch downstairs. There is a cat here who has commandeered the 2nd floor, and even though I am perfectly fine with her (friendly and curious and playful but not at all aggressive), she doesn’t like me. I’m kind of scared of her actually, due to her unfriendly attitude, so I stay downstairs and leave her the top floor for herself. I am extremely healthy and am fully housebroken and can’t wait to find a wonderful person or people to call my own. I will never be able to be trained to be off-leash, as both Hounds and Great Pyrenees are bred for going-going-going, so you would need to keep me on leash or in a fenced area at all times. Don’t think that if you just work with me we can overcome this…it’s not a training issue, it’s a breed genetics/brain wiring issue!

Cohabitation

I love to play with other dogs, and can shift my play style from rough-and-tumble with the sturdy dogs, to gentle and sweet with the smaller ones. When I had a chance to play with a little Pomeranian the other day at the dog park, instead of jumping and leaping all over her like I would with the sturdy dogs, I jumped and leaped all around her, but never made contact, so as not to scare or hurt her! I am wonderful with other dogs and so far have not met one who I don't like!

I really should live with another dog in the home. If there is not another dog in the house, I get distressed when left home on my own, but am just fine when you leave if there is another dog with me for company! For this reason, we all think that I should really go to a home where there is at least 1 other friendly, playful dog around.

I am fine with cats! Curious and playful, but respectful and no aggressiveness at all.

Summary

I am just the BEST boy! Everyone who meets me (at the dog park, in my foster home, at the boarding kennel) just raves about how wonderful and loving and adorable and incredibly kind-hearted and good natured I am. If you are interested in adopting Charley Walker, please fill out an online adoption application and live close to Ithaca , Syracuse, Binghamton, or Elmira. We do home visits on every applicant, and can't do home visits where we don't have local volunteers.

Because of the high rate of accidents between dogs and young children, we rarely adopt out our dogs or puppies into homes with young children.  If you think your particular situation might warrant an exception, please feel free to inquire with us.
