Tanner Has Been Adopted!

Hi! My name is Tanner, and I am an incredibly sweet, adorable, playful, shy-at-first, 9-10 month old, 50 pound, neutered, male, Golden Retriever/Great Pyrenees mix!

My foster mom wants you to know that I am a 100% absolutely sweetheart! Which is pretty amazing, because I had a very rough background. The rescue folks don’t know exactly what happened to me, but when I was rescued, I was absolutely terrified that people were going to hurt me. I would shake and tremble, belly-crawl, and try to hide under whatever I could find. It was very sad, they said it broke all of their hearts to see! Know what though? Those days are over!

My foster mom wants you to know that I arrived a mere 3 weeks ago, but I have progressed in leaps and bounds! She says that I hardly resemble at all that terrified, frightened, shy and heartbreakingly scared little fella that I was when first rescued in KY. My true personality has emerged, and I am simply a super HAPPY, playful, sweet-sweet-sweet boy!

I LOVE to play!! I absolutely adore (and require!) canine companions and can often be found wrestling, chasing, and rolling around with them having the best time ever. I also love my toys-- especially bones, hard rubber toys, rope toys and stuffed animals! Anything I can gnaw on and chew is ideal for me. In addition to my dog buddies and toys, I really like to be near my foster mom! I am always happy to see her, greet her, and I LOVE getting petted, scratched, and gently snuggled.

My foster mom says that I make her laugh a lot. I was initially quite scared of the stairs, but since recently conquering that fear, now I get tremendous joy out of zipping up and down them just as fast as I can! I am very impressed with and proud of myself!

I also love going for leashed walks, and I do very well on leash using a body walking harness. I cannot be walked just leash-to-collar, as the pulling on my neck seems to upset me. Guess what? I’m also housebroken!

I am super friendly (once I know you) and show absolutely no bossiness or possessiveness in any arena--not with food, toys, or affection... I am happy for the other dogs to have all of it too! I am also very good in the house…I do not do anything destructive. I will *of course* make off with the occasional slipper, or with interesting items from the laundry basket, or small items left about where I can get them, but I don’t destroy them and never mess with important things like furniture, carpet, walls, etc!

Energy-wise, I am a wonderful mix. While I am quite playful and am up for walks and hikes and lots of chasing around with the other dogs,I am also content hanging out on my own with a toy, or just relaxing on a dog bed (but always close-by). My foster mom says that I am the ideal combination of active and idle.... always up for play but able to settle down very nicely! She says that I have an ideal temperament.... how nice is she?

I was rescued with my brother Harris, and have been fostered with Harris since (and 2 other dogs), but Harris is heading off to his very own forever home soon, which will be a bit of a transition for me. I’ve never been without him before, but I’m sure having the other 2 dogs here with whom I’m great friends will help. When I find my very own forever home, it will again be a bit of a transition for me, so I will need people who are sensitive to that, and can be patient and understanding, as it will take me some time o find my comfort and ease in that new situation. Because I have always been with my brother or other dogs, and take great comfort and joy in them, the rescue folks will only consider a home for me in which there is another dog who is likely to be a good playmate for me, and one who will help me to feel secure.

If you are interested in adopting Tanner, please fill out an online adoption application and live close to Ithaca , Syracuse, Binghamton, or Elmira. We do home visits on every applicant, and can't do home visits where we don't have local volunteers.

Because of the high rate of accidents between dogs and young children, we rarely adopt out our dogs or puppies into homes with young children.  If you think your particular situation might warrant an exception, please feel free to inquire with us.
