Ginger Has Been Adopted!

Hi everyone! My name is Ginger, and I am a ridiculously adorable, and incredibly affectionate, 2 year- old, 40 pound, spayed female Yellow Lab/small hound mix! I have been in Ithaca for a couple of weeks and my foster parents want you to know that I am just an all around fabulous girl!!

I absolutely love people-- all kinds of people--am just so happy to spend time in your company. I’m living with a terrific couple and their toddler, and I am super good with all three. There is also a sweet male dog and a friendly cat, and we are all good buddies (though truth be told, I like humans even more than other 4-leggeds!). One of my favorite things is curling up on the couch with you, so I’m hoping for an adopter who thinks that is a great thing too!

My foster mom thinks I would be a great hiking companion. I walk really nicely on leash, and though I am of course interested in smelling stuff and checking out what’s going on, I am very aware of my person and want to stick near to them.

I started out sleeping in a crate at night, but I don’t like that very much. Once my foster parents saw that I was housebroken and didn’t chew inappropriate things, they started letting me stay free in the house all night, and I choose to go and sleep curled up on the couch at night. I do a great job of keeping an eye on everything, and boy, I just really love the couch!! Similarly, I used to be crated during the day when they were at work, but it became clear that this was causing me stress and upset, so now they leave me free in the house during the day and (as long as edibles and any dangerous things are put away), I have been a perfect lady in their absence. No accidents, and no mussing up anything in the house in any way. My foster mom tells me I am such a good girl.

When they come home I am so, so happy to see them!! I show them how excited I am by "talking" to them with cute, barky whines and by begging for belly rubs and smooches. I love to give lots and lots of kisses to anyone who will let me, and they tell me it’s A-OK because I am not a sloppy or drooly sort of kisser.

I have made great friends with my foster parents' 2 year old son. I like to go in and wake him up in the morning with kisses. During the day I hang out with him because he loves a good adventure like all little boys and dogs do. J I am super gentle with him and he is very respectful of me. He is growing up with a dog and cat and his parents have taught him how to act with a dog and other animals. CDR does not usually adopt dogs to homes with small children but if your little ones know how to be respectful we can check it out since I am showing myself to be quite good with this one!

I also love to play with the dog who lives here. We both like some “rough-and-tumble” play, and enjoy jumping around with each other. We play tug of war with a rope and share our bones very nicely. Sometimes we get a little bonkers and my foster mom asks us to go outside and play in the fenced yard, and while their dog is glad to do this, I often would rather just stop playing and stay inside with the people, which they think is kind of endearing. Being adopted by someone who has another dog in the house would be great in that we’d hopefully play a lot, but as long as I get good daily exercise in some way, I could also be very happy as an only dog. Time with people is more the thing for me….that’s what I need most.

My foster mom wants you to know that I have some impressive ball playing and I am a pro at bringing it back and dropping it right at your feet! Ready to go again!! Sometimes I like to tease the other dog by prancing by him with the ball in my mouth, just waiting for him to chase me!! I have a silly side to me sometimes!

She also says that I am quite smart and am eager to learn. I would love to go to a positive obedience class with you and would probably love agility too. When I arrived in my foster home I did not know any commands and I also did not know what a treat was! Well—now that I get the “learn new thing..get treat!” connection, I am ready to learn flips for some good treats! I learned how to sit in a day just for dry biscuits. Guess what I could learn for some very yummy freeze dried chicken livers!

I am gentle with everyone, give kisses, play ball, am very smart, playful with people, animals and toys and I am housebroken. Good golly—I’m a pretty nice girl, huh? I am looking for a home that ideally would have a fenced in yard so I can run around a bit. Another dog (or cat) would be fine but not a necessity since I totally love people. I would like my family to be active as I would like to go for walks and we think I would like hiking. I also hope my family would take a training class or two with me. I am so eager to learn who knows what I might be able to do with you!! My foster mom summed me up in just 4 words, she said I was “a wonderful little pup!!!”

If you are interested in adopting Ginger, please fill out an online adoption application and live close to Ithaca , Syracuse, Binghamton, or Elmira. We do home visits on every applicant, and can't do home visits where we don't have local volunteers.

Because of the high rate of accidents between dogs and young children, we rarely adopt out our dogs or puppies into homes with young children.  If you think your particular situation might warrant an exception, please feel free to inquire with us.
