Charlie Has Been Adopted!
Hi! My name is Charlie, and I am an incredibly sweet, calm, mild-mannered, and super loving, 6 year old, 75 pound, neutered male Collie/Great Pyrenees mix!
I was saved from a very sad situation in KY. Me and my brothers (Rory and Romeo, also on the website) and a few other dogs were owned by a very nice old woman. She had us live outside in a small pen 24/7 (see photo), but she was kind to us. Unfortunately, she got dementia, and had to move to a nursing facility. Her family members didn’t want to deal with any of us dogs, and had an appointment scheduled for all of us to be euthanized. How terrible, huh? Luckily, just in the nick of time, a wonderful rescue lady found out about us and offered to take all of us dogs until she could find rescue for us, and that’s what happened! Three of us came up to NY, and the rest went to rescues elsewhere.
I am adjusting really well to my foster family even though being an only dog is a totally new experience for me. And living indoors is too! I love being showered with attention and give my affection in return. I come over to you all the time “asking” for some petting and gently putting my paw up on your arm to “ask” even more clearly, in case you didn’t notice. I’m told it’s incredibly endearing.
I do this adorable thing…I like to gently pick up my foster mom’s slippers and then hide them under the couch or underneath the couch cushions when she is away. I’m a good boy and never chew them at all, I just seem to think they would be happier hidden away! My foster family has given me bones and toys to chew on and a nice soft bed to sleep on but because I have never had any of those things before I really don’t know what to do with them! I will sleep right next to the plush dog bed, on the floor! Everyone is waiting for the day that I discover that soft things are more yummy to lay on than the hard floor!
I’m in a house with 3 kids ages 8-16 and I love the attention I get from them and wag my tail whenever they come into a room. I’m totally housebroken, and have not had even 1 accident in my foster home, which is pretty awesome. I had never been taken for a walk in my entire life until I got rescued, so I don’t have much stamina and this whole “collar-and-leash thing” is totally new, but I am doing great. Using a body harness for walks works really well for me because I don’t like the feeling of tugging on my neck. I am very well behaved on leash, I pretty much never pull and amble along at a very relaxed pace. I am enjoying taking walks around the neighborhood, and was recently to the groomer for a bath, and did very well there (even having my nails clipped was fine!). The best part of the grooming experience was being around other dogs again, because I really do enjoy their company.
My foster family says I have totally earned their trust in the house, and they can leave me to roam freely all over when they are not home, and I never do anything wrong. I do not get on furniture, I never chew things up, and I never have accidents! Some call that a perfect dog, I am told!
So far, I can do a few stairs to get in or out of a house, but am not braving the full set of stairs up to the 2nd floor. Maybe eventually I will, but for now, I stay on the ground floor.
I don’t know any commands just yet but my foster family is taking me to a trainer soon so they can learn how to teach me some! There are 2 cats in my foster home that I’d really like to introduce myself to in a friendly way but I guess they just aren’t used to me yet and they hide upstairs.
If you think you'd like to adopt me, please fill out an online adoption application and live close to Ithaca , Syracuse, Binghamton, or Elmira. We do home visits on every applicant, and can't do home visits where we don't have local volunteers.
