Max Has Been Adopted!

Hi! I'm Max! I'm a super loyal, affectionate, fun-loving and extremely easy going, 65 pound, neutered male Black Lab Mix! I am probably between 2 and 3 years old and I've got loads of love (and kisses) to give. I came from a high-kill shelter in KY, where I was returned because I got too big for the small apartment that my owners had. You’d think I might be sad to have lost my people, but honestly…life is so much better now! I get so much more attention and love than I ever had before, plus I go for these amazing walks, hikes, and jogs every day with my foster people! Life is terrific and they promise me that they will find me a forever home that is just as wonderful. I definitely belong in a house with plenty of access to the great outdoors!

I am a very laid back guy, despite being young and having good energy. I adore having people around, and am comfortable meeting new people and seeing if I can get them to pet me for a while! I enjoy giving kisses, and once you have been petting me or paying attention to me for a little while, I will most likely “thank you” with some of my special (I am told) kisses (not slobbery at all)! That said, I’m not needy or clingy at all. If you have other things to do, that’s just fine, I will go rest or find some toys and entertain myself quietly really well.

My gosh, I love to be outside (with you)!! I enjoy trotting through the woods (on leash!) and I have been exploring all sorts of trails with my foster mom. I like running into the creeks too but I haven't gone swimming yet. I fear nothing in terms of rough terrain; I can tackle tall grass, climb up muddy trails full of roots, and bound across creek beds. I'm a wonderful jogging partner, if you like to do that. I'm pretty good on the leash, especially with my foster dad (I will just happily walk next to him!).

In the house,as long as I have good walks and exercise, I will happily settle down to nap, follow you around if you are doing interesting things, or entertain myself with my toys. When I am in the mood, I love to play with my squeaky stuffed animals, throwing them up I the air, pouncing on them, and chasing after them back and forth. I’m told it’s pretty fun to watch!

I am a really fast learner. Within the first week of living with my foster parents, I have learned to sit before getting my breakfast and dinner, and I can also "lie down" for a treat. I will do really well getting adopted out into a family who has time to keep working with me to reinforce this great behavior. Regarding housebreaking, I still have the occasional accident but am crate-trained so if you are out for a few hours, you can just crate me until I am 100% of the way housebroken. When you are home, I appreciate being taken out every few hours while I am learning this whole "hold it" thing. I do sleep through the night just fine without any accidents in my foster parents’ bedroom (with my foster sister, Chloe). I would love it if you had a fenced-in backyard, but am ok if you don’t as long as you take me out often!

I love visiting the dog park and it is terrific exercise for me because I can sprint to my heart’s content! I love to play chase oh my gosh, I love it so much! Any dog that runs, I will run after him/her, with my ridiculously long goofy tongue hanging out of one side! Although there are balls at the park, I am way more interested in meeting doggy friends. I always “check in” with my foster mom when I’m at the dog park and am terrific at coming to her when she calls to me. If I have had my fill of romping around, I am SUPER mellow on the leash, and hardly bat an eyelash at other dogs even if they are barking and pulling on THEIR leashes. Otherwise, I can get antsy/barky on the leash around other dogs (because I soooo badly want to play). So yes, please please take me to have fun with other dogs if you are interested in me!!

If you think you'd like to adopt me, please fill out an online adoption application and live close to Ithaca , Syracuse, Binghamton, or Elmira. We do home visits on every applicant, and can't do home visits where we don't have local volunteers.

Because of the high rate of accidents between dogs and young children, we rarely adopt out our dogs or puppies into homes with young children.  If you think your particular situation might warrant an exception, please feel free to inquire with us.
