Mikey Has Been Adopted!

Hi! My name is Mikey and I am an incredibly affectionate, cuddly, sweet, and loving, 3 year old, neutered male Dachshund! I was saved from a high-kill shelter in KY and am incredibly happy to be in a loving CDR foster home!

One key thing to know about me…I love laps! Yup…I do, I do, I do!! My favorite thing in the world is to come over, nuzzle you with my head, and then if you are game for some affection, then I gently crawl up into your lap, where I will very happily stay until you need to get up! I love cuddling and snuggling and being talked to and petted. I like my petting pretty much every which way…on my head, my chest, my ears, my back and of course my belly…anywhere you like works for me!

I’m very gentle and sweet and easygoing. I’m delighted if you want to go for a walk and I am happy-happy just trotting along with you, sniffing and watching and seeing what all is going on. I walk nicely on leash for the most part, but you have to keep a tight hold of my leash because I do like to lunge after birds! I know it’s silly, I can’t catch them, but it’s fun to try. When one of my foster parents takes me for a walk, I am very happy, but when both of them come along, it’s like the greatest thing in the entire world! I love being with my “pack” and having all of my special people around me!

I also enjoy rolling on my back, either on carpet or on grass, which is very fun and I am told, quite adorable. I adore being told that I am a good boy, and when you tell me this, I get all happy and proud and really want to do again whatever I just did that made you say that! I seem very eager to please and very focused on what my people are saying and wanting, so though I have had no training in the past, I will learn commands quickly if someone takes the time to teach me things using positive strategies! If you make it fun for me, I will learn really well! My first foster mom would make these kissy-kissy sounds when she wanted me to come to her, and that made me so happy and excited, I would run over to her as fast as I could, and she would make a big happy deal of how great that was. This is the kind of training that works for me!

I am housebroken and like sleeping on a dogbed next to you. I love jumping up onto sofas to sit beside you (or to invite you to sit beside me!), but we Dachshunds have delicate spines, so I should never be allowed to a) jump OFF of furniture (I need to be lifted down gently) and b) jump either on or off of a bed (it’s too high). Dachshunds can get serious spinal problems that sometimes require surgery, and a main way to stop this from occurring is to make sure we don’t jump on and off of high things! I like to take naps near you and once in a while I snore!

As for toys, I like Kongs filled with treats very much, but so far am not interested in squeaky toys. The only thing that so far I seem to not like is older gentleman. Isn’t that odd? I am absolutely over the moon for pretty much any nice person, but if I see an older gentlemen! I have met 2 so far, and one I barked and growled at (the only time I have ever growled!) and the other one made me nervous and I was very stand-offish with him. The rescue folks guess that there was an older gentleman in my life before coming to rescue who was not a nice man, and so I worry when I see anyone that reminds me of him. Probably would not be best for me to be adopted by an older gentleman…would be too stressful! But you can work on this with me after you adopt me…just make sure that any time I see an older gentleman, you have that man toss treats my way while ignoring me (ignoring makes me feel safer…eye contact and approaching me makes me feel more scared). After a while, I will start to realize that older gentleman are “treat dispensers” and I won’t be able to help but feel more positively toward them! I seem to like all other men and all women, so it’s a very specific thing.

I am ok being left alone, but I don’t love it. Leaving me with a stuffed Kong helps, but it would be so wonderful if I could find a home where I’m not alone a huge amount of time. When you come home from being away, I am VERY happy and show it with a little happy dance! I don’t do anything destructive when you’re gone, I just get kinda sad.

I am healthy and wonderful and excited to find my new home! If you think you'd like to adopt me, please fill out an online adoption application and live close to Ithaca , Syracuse, Binghamton, or Elmira. We do home visits on every applicant, and can't do home visits where we don't have local volunteers.

Because of the high rate of accidents between dogs and young children, we rarely adopt out our dogs or puppies into homes with young children.  If you think your particular situation might warrant an exception, please feel free to inquire with us.
