Jill Has Been Adopted!

Hi everyone, my name is Jill! I am an incredibly sweet, unbelievably gentle and loving 8 year old, 90 pound, spayed, female Great Pyrenees! I just recently arrived in Ithaca and am loving it here!! I started my journey at a very overcrowded shelter in Kentucky then went into a temp foster home in Ohio with some great people who showed me that people are super nice! I also found out that living in a house and sleeping on a big, comfy dog bed is a glorious thing. Once there was a spot for me in a CDR foster home, I came on up!

My life until now was pretty much all about having puppies, and because I was used to having litter after litter after litter for so many years, I did not have a chance to have too much fun or do normal pet dog things. I’m so loving, the rescue folks are sure I was an amazing momma dog, but after 7+ years of non-stop mothering, I am ready for the easy life! And amazingly enough, though my life was less than ideal for so many years, my foster mom says I have an amazing, beautiful, incredibly happy spirit and am a wonderful, kind, and gentle soul.

I am a bit shy when I first meet you but I warm up pretty quickly. I wag my tail A LOT, it makes my foster mom laugh all the time. Every time I see her, hear her voice or just look at her across the room I “thump, thump, thump!!” I also have this howly, whiny noise that I make when I am excited about something like… breakfast! Or… dinner! Or… when my foster mom comes home! Or…when she comes downstairs in the morning! It is so wonderful to have people hang out with me, kiss me and pet me that I just want to show how excited I am about it!! She says it’s awfully endearing. I am also missing a couple of teeth so when I sleep my tongue hangs out the side! When I wake up, a lot of times I will look at you with my tongue still hanging out of my mouth and my foster mom says it is absolutely adorable and gives me lots of love for it! My foster mom calls me lots of different names, like Silly Jilly Bear and Jilly Sue, I don’t know where she gets this stuff but I love it! No one has ever done any of that for me before and acted like they just wanted to have me to love. :)

Some of my favorite things are eating, sleeping, laying outside in the sunshine for a little nap and…did I mention eating? I really love to eat!! My teeth are in poor shape after years of neglect but let me tell you it does not stop me from eating, no worries there. I do not like to go into crates or into small rooms with a closed door, but I really don’t need to be crated because I am totally housebroken and very well behaved when you leave me home with full run of the house.

I am living in my foster home with 3 other dogs and a cat. I get along great with everyone. I totally ignore the cat, but not the cat’s food bowl! I get some good daily exercise by trying to get to the food left in her bowl before my foster mom sees it there and moves it away! I’m not much of a rascal, but I did once team up with one of the Corgis in the house to get the job done!

I like to be where I can see all the activity going on. I really don’t play with the dogs in my foster home but I do like to be around them. I don’t do well climbing stairs and am a little stiff in my joints. I am taking fish oil capsules and glucosamine/chondroitin to help ease my achy bones. The vet that I saw said I am in very good shape but have some arthritis in my hips so she started me on an anti-inflammatory pill that I take every day and likely will for the rest of my life. The medication is working and my foster mom said I am moving around better and have a new pep in my step! I like to go for short walks and walk best with a Sense-ation or Sense-ible or Easy Walk (no pull) harness because I am strong and occasionally decide I need to go check something right that moment and take you along with me!

I am so lucky that I came to CDR and soon will find my forever home. I dream about it while I sleep and it is always the same dream, a home with a fenced in yard so I can sit in the sunshine or enjoy a shady spot, another mellow dog, not a lot of stairs, a nice soft bed and food. I don’t ask for much but I have so much love to give and whenever you want I will wag my tail…thump, thump, thump..... to show you how happy and grateful I am to have you in my life!

If you think you'd like to adopt me, please fill out an online adoption application and live close to Ithaca , Syracuse, Binghamton, or Elmira. We do home visits on every applicant, and can't do home visits where we don't have local volunteers.

Because of the high rate of accidents between dogs and young children, we rarely adopt out our dogs or puppies into homes with young children.  If you think your particular situation might warrant an exception, please feel free to inquire with us.
