Jax Has Been Adopted!

Hi! My name is Jax and I am a heartbreakingly sweet, 3 year-old, male Pointer/Hound mix. I am a sweet, shy, lovable, little guy!

I had a rough start in life and wound up in a high kill shelter in KY. A nice group of rescue folks realized what a sweet boy I am and brought me up north to find my forever home. In my former life I didn’t get to be indoors and wasn't around humans, so I was pretty terrified of everything and everyone when I first arrived. For many weeks, I chose to spend most of my time hunkered down, hiding in the back of the open crate that was thankfully made available to me. Thank goodness for that-- it was the only place I felt safe for a while! My foster family has been fantastic--very patient, very gentle, and very understanding. By living with them, I am learning that people are actually wonderful, which I had just never imagined!

My foster family includes 2 people, 3 other dogs, two cats, and chickens! I really like the other dogs, and in fact it makes me feel safe to have them around. I can be very brave when my foster brothers are with me! At first I was really afraid of the cats and would run into my crate whenever they came near. I know now that they are okay and won’t hurt me and we sometimes give each other sniffs, but it still kind of scares me when they jump up on top of things. My crate is my favorite place to go when I am unsure about things. It's my "safe place" and I love it!

I love to go for walks and to be able to run freely off-leash in my fenced yard. I would love to be your walking or hiking companion! I do some adorable things now... sometimes when I greet my foster parents, I give them a big "play bow" and sort of "laugh" at them--I open up my mouth and go "waaaaah, waaaah, waaaah!" which totally cracks them up. They also love it that my tail does "helicopter tail" when I am really happy (round and round in circles).

I need to take things slowly, but in order to help me gain confidence and feel more relaxed out in the world, my foster mom likes to take me in the car with her. I like the car because I get to see all kinds of interesting stuff and I know that I am safe inside. It scares me when mom takes me out of the car at a new place. But after a little while I’m usually okay. Sometimes we go to get ice cream – and I watch the other people eating ice cream from the safety of the car, or we’ll go to a park and just sit in the back of the car together and people watch. Though it can be a little scary for me, I am getting more comfortable over time, and am very grateful that my foster mom takes the time to help me in this way.

I am crate trained and housebroken and walk nicely on a leash. I will be happiest in a quiet home that has another friendly dog or two. I’m also looking for a human who will continue to introduce me to new things, and will have patience with me while I explore new stuff at my own pace. I will never be ok off-leash, so am also really hoping for a home with a fenced yard, so i can run and play and not get lost!

If you think you might like to adopt me, please fill out an online adoption application and live close to Ithaca , Syracuse, Binghamton, or Elmira. We do home visits on every applicant, and can't do home visits where we don't have local volunteers.

Because of the high rate of accidents between dogs and young children, we rarely adopt out our dogs or puppies into homes with young children.  If you think your particular situation might warrant an exception, please feel free to inquire with us.
