Huckleberry Has Been Adopted!
Hi! My name is Huckleberry and I am a kind, loving, and sweet 8 year-old Beagle. Finn is my middle name, because I've been on quite a big adventure, like my namesake, who was a boy like me.
Let me tell you my story. I was living on the streets, homeless, and so skinny my ribs were really sticking out, when my luck suddenly turned, and a kind young woman who noticed my ribs and my big brown eyes, rescued me- I jumped into her arms and car without much coaxing. I'm just an open, trusting and accepting kind of guy that way. I'm also an extremely affectionate and loving guy, which maybe you can tell from the video. This nice woman brought me to her parent's house (they became my foster parents), where I have been living for the last while. I have never been so well cared for. I am so happy and grateful.
There are four other dogs here - big ones- and five cats. I get along with everyone, although I'm a little more energetic than they are. To be honest, I don't need other dogs for company, I'm more into the people thing, but I'm easygoing as far as family members- I'm the kind of dog who would be fine as an only dog or fine as one of several dogs or fine with just cats. I would really like to check out YOUR family!
I am a special boy and have some special needs. I was a bit jumpy when I came, but turns out it was because I had some untreated medical conditions. I've calmed down quite a bit since getting diagnosed and treated. I now have medication that helps me digest my food better (I'm actually absorbing nutrition, which sadly I wasn't previously), and I get insulin shots because I have diabetes. The stuff that helps me digest my food is called enzymes, and it just mixes in with my meals and I wolf it down. I get my insulin shots twice a day, and I take them like a champ- no complaining. Now that my condition is being taken care of, I feel much more calm and happy. If I act a little jumpy once in a while, my people know it's not a manners issue, it's probably because I'm ready for my shot.
I'm very good friends with the other dogs and cats here now, and after our walks we relax together. Maybe chew a bone or two. My manners still need a little polishing, because nobody took the time to teach me when I was young, but I am a very quick learner, and I've already learned how to sit, and how to hold everything until we go outside (I haven't had an accident in the house in... a really long time!) I've also learned how to walk on a leash without tugging, which is a big deal for me, because I have a very, very good nose, which is always telling me, "follow your nose, wherever it goes!" And, being a beagle, I'm an excellent singer. Seeing a cat in the distance usually causes me to burst into song.
I sleep in a crate, which I like very much, and sometimes go in there for a nap with the door open. There is a fenced yard at my foster home and I sniff around in it to my heart's content. I like going for walks, and also like relaxing near my people. I've clearly had a tough life, but I have such a great attitude and personality, you would never know it.
I'm looking for a forever home with folks who will give me lots of love, take me on nice walks, spend as much time as they can hanging around with me, and who can take care of my medical needs. In return, I will fill your heart with love and laughter. And I'll cuddle you as much as you can take.
If you think you might like to adopt me, please fill out an online adoption application and live close to Ithaca , Syracuse, Binghamton, or Elmira. We do home visits on every applicant, and can't do home visits where we don't have local volunteers.
