Ginger Has Been Adopted!
Hi! My name is Ginger, and I am a sweet, affectionate, calm yet lively, 5-6 year old, spayed, female Chocolate Lab mix!
I have the prettiest chocolate brown reddish coat that everyone just loves. Though I went gray at a very young age, everyone says it makes me look striking and unique. They are so sweet!
I am very loving and affectionate, and while I am laid back much of the time, I can also be quite full of spunk and energy, and I just love to play ball! I’ll be your best friend if you’ll hang out with me and throw the squeaky tennis ball for me to catch and fetch, but I also just like to carry it in my mouth and run around and play with it myself. I also do this adorable silly thing...I make my squeaky toys squeak not by chewing them, but instead by bopping them with my nose! It cracks people up. Truth be told...I love to crack people up!
Another very funny thing I do that will keep you laughing...When I bark (which I don't do very often, as I am a quiet girl most of the time), my tail sticks straight out behind me, and my front legs come off the ground like I am being lifted up by my barking!! It is really funny to see, my people tell me, as they laugh and roll their eyes.
Besides playing ball (as if that’s not enough!) I also really like to follow my foster folks around, get belly rubs, and go for walks and to explore. I like exploring so much actually that sometimes I pull a little on the leash because I am just so darn excited. My foster parents are helping me get better with this and I am already much better at it.
Other things that I love...food! Yes, I love to eat! I am such a good eater that I have been on a bit of a diet, but now I am svelte and trim and now can play even more!! I am embarrassed to say that I also greatly enjoy pulling the stuffing out of stuffed dog toys, and then eating the stuffing. Not good. So at present, I only get toys to play with which I cannot eat, like a Kong or other hard toy. Oh well!
In my foster home, I am living with 2 other dogs and 1 cat. I like to hang out to them and seem to enjoy their company well enough and lately (about 3 months after being here), I am starting to play with them. My foster parents think I would be fine in a house with other pets (if they were the calm, mellow type), but would also be fine as an only pet if I got lots of human attention (what I love the most).
It’s been a tough year for me. Almost a year ago I was diagnosed with heartworm disease, which is fatal for dogs if left untreated. Luckily for me (and for my future owners!) no one wanted to give up on me, as I’m such an awesome dog and it was clear that I still had a lot of living (and ball playing!) to do. Cayuga Dog Rescue paid for my treatment and some great rescue folks in Ohio fostered me while I got better, and now here I am, all better and ready to find my forever home!
If you think you might like to adopt me, please fill out an online adoption application and live close to Ithaca , Syracuse, Binghamton, or Elmira. We do home visits on every applicant, and can't do home visits where we don't have local volunteers.
