Brody Has Been Adopted!

Hi! My name is Brody and I am an extremely gentle, sweet, big-hearted, handsome, and shy, 4-5 year old, 80 pound, neutered male Black Lab mix! I came all the way from an overcrowded shelter in Kentucky, where I was very scared, and am so relieved to be here in NY in a nice foster home!

Although I was very shy and timid when I arrived, I am already starting to come out of my shell a bit, which feels ever-so-nice to me, and seems to make the people around me really happy for me. My foster mom thinks I was probably formerly kept as an outdoor dog, because I am pretty unsure of myself when I am inside the house. I have only gotten brave enough to explore part of the living room and the landing on the stairs so far, but I really look forward to when I get braver and can go check out the rest of the house! My foster parents tell me it’s just fine to take things at my own speed, and I appreciate their gentleness and patience. I hope for a lifelong home with a person or family who will be the same.

Surprisingly, I am not scared of unfamiliar noises like the TV, pots and pans, and voices, as are many shy dogs, and I’m a little bit proud of that! I like to find a safe and comfortable spot on the carpet and just hang out---I don't move around too much once I am settled into a comfortable spot, so you don’t have to go looking all over for me when you want me! So far, I won’t use dog beds or blankets – for now I am quite content to curl up in a quiet corner on a rug and watch from there—but the rescue folks hope that someday I discover how wonderful dog bed and blankets can feel. I'm not yet seeking attention and affection from people, but my foster parents come over and pet me and kiss and cuddle with me, and it feels really nice! I am finding that I especially like having my butt, chin, and chest scratched. All this affection stuff is new to me, but I'm very glad to be learning!

I am starting to show some interest in toys, and have wagged my tail and have shown interest in playing, but it’s all baby steps for me at this point. My tail is tucked between my legs a lot when I get up and walk around inside, though at times when I see my foster Mom or Dad I give it a little wag, which is a terrific sign they tell me. They look at me and say “awwwwww…” in this really sweet way a lot, and they say that I show a lot of promise and am a "gentle giant".

I love food and treats and get along well with other dogs and cats.

I would love a home with people who are patient, kind, and willing to work with me and take me for walks and work on forming a relationship. My foster mom says I have a very sweet face and eyes that are a bit sad and fearful but also very hopeful. I am housetrained and don't necessarily need other dogs in my new home, though if you had a friend for me to spend my day with, that would be nice too.

If you think you might like to adopt me, please fill out an online adoption application and live close to Ithaca , Syracuse, Binghamton, or Elmira. We do home visits on every applicant, and can't do home visits where we don't have local volunteers.

Because of the high rate of accidents between dogs and young children, we rarely adopt out our dogs or puppies into homes with young children.  If you think your particular situation might warrant an exception, please feel free to inquire with us.
