Hi! I'm Sprite, a loving, sweet-as-honey, stunning purebred female white German Shepherd! I'm 27 inches tall and about 100 pounds. I'm 9 years old and in excellent health and very athletic. I love to run and romp and I have a great sense of fun.
What's really great about me is my sweet calm personality and uncommon intelligence. I'm happy and sweet, but also amazingly smart and perceptive. I'm a giant shaggy monster of a dog who sometimes has a big mouth, but there is no aggression in me at all and I'm almost always the best-behaved dog you ever saw. When my sponsor takes me out in public most everyone is charmed by how beautiful and intelligent and perfectly behaved I am. I'm obedience trained and know to stay close to my human in this situation. I know what is socially appropriate and what is not.
The best example of my star quality happened in January 2010. My owner, who was retired, was snowed in and decided she just had to get her mail, so she went out and was wading through knee-deep snow when she stumbled and fell forward into the stuff. It was so deep she couldn't push against anything to get her legs under her. There was nothing to grab onto. She started to think she was going to die there. I became concerned too, so I came over and stood next to her and braced myself so she could use my strong body like a walker. That's how she got on her feet again. It's too bad there were no reporters around to see this or I'd be famous now as a real-life 'Lassie,' which I am.
Which brings me to the sad subject of why I must appeal to you now. Last December my owner died and now my future is uncertain. No one I know can keep me.
What would be the ideal new home for me? Well, I've lived in the country all my life; city living involves skills I never learned, but if it means nice walks I'm game. I like to stay outside most of the time, even in bitter cold. I spent my whole life until last summer with another dog, who I miss terribly. I long to have another dog or dogs in my life that way. I also recently spent time in a house with lots of kids including a one-year-old baby, and there was no problem whatsoever. What I love most of all is to go off into the world with my human to explore and see new things. I get bored out of my skull if I can't ever do this. I love car rides and hiking. My previous owner used to call me "an excellent trail dog." When hiking I respond to hand signs as well as voice commands. I'm a treasure for anyone who needs a great hiking buddy. I've never tagged along on a horseback ride, but I know this would be just my cup of tea.
No one EVER has to worry about me getting hit by a car. When I was nine months old I was walking on a leash with my owner on the shoulder of a state highway when another dog came running over to say 'howdy.' He ran right in front of a car going seventy and was killed instantly. It sounded like a cannon going off, and he flew fifty feet through the air. Watching this happen, I understood everything and was sick with horror and fear. Since that day I've been as road-wise as you. I learned what cars can do the easiest way a dog can.
Of course I am housebroken, up to date on vaccines, and have wonderful manners in the house. I'm a terrific girl, and hope to find my new home soon! If you think you might like to adopt me, please submit an online adoption application.
