Hazel Has Been Adopted!
Hi everyone! My name is Hazel, I am the sweetest, most affectionate, loving, spunky, silly, and snuggly little Beagle you could ever meet. I was about to be euthanized at a high-kill shelter, but a wonderful rescue lady in KY saved me at the last minute and now I am in a fabulous CDR foster home!
I have the greatest news in the world to share! I have this big tumor in my mouth and jaw, and I overheard several vets tell the rescue folks that there was no hope and nothing that could usefully be done for me. But then one vet said, "not so fast!" and sent me up to see a special oncologist who knows more about cancer than most people. He thought there could be a chance.
Apparently, some mouth and jaw cancers are really nasty and metastasize to other organs and they have a really sad prognosis. But other types are not so aggressive, and some don't metastasize at all, and so can be treated by removing the tumor. In order to get an idea of whether I had the bad one, he did a chest x-ray on me, and biopsied my lymph nodes. The really bad types usually spread to the lungs and lymph system, so this is a good way to figure this out. Guess what we just found? My chest x-ray was clear and so were my lymph biopsies! No sign of cancer outside of my mouth/jaw, which means that even though we still don't know exactly what type of cancer it is, we are pretty darn sure it's not the super bad kind. It is most likely to be the kind that we can surgically remove, and I might be fine after that! Can you believe it?
I thought getting rescued from the loud and crowded shelter was the best thing ever, and was pretty resigned to enjoying my short life as much as I could. But now I find my life might not be short at all! I could not be happier, and I am so grateful to all the nice rescue folks and the great doctors, and my foster mom especially. We need to raise big money to pay for my surgery...they are going to have to remove the better part of half of my jaw, but they say I will be able to eat just fine and should function well in all ways once I am recovered. This is going to be a very expensive surgery...can you help me please?
In the meantime, I am having the greatest time in my foster home. My foster mom is the nicest, warmest, kindest, sweetest person, and her other dogs and cats are terrific to me. I love going for walks and sniffing about in the fenced yard, lounging on all the soft dogbeds and sofas in the house, and most of all, getting love and attention from my foster mom and her friends.
I'm not up for adoption at this point but that could change though, so please stay tuned! And since my care is going to be very expensive over time, no matter what, I would be so grateful if you could donate to the dog rescue on my behalf. They are being so good to me, and I know it's hard for them with so many injured and sick dogs in rescue at the present time. Thanks so much, have a wonderful holiday season!
